Inflation occurs when currency issuance becomes untethered from production: the currency created dilutes the price of circulating exchange media, and it benefits those closest to its issuance at the expense of those further away in the transaction web because price information is discovered only through transactions. In simpler terms, if you increase the circulating supply of currency without also increasing the circulating supply of goods and services, prices rise -- i.e. the price of currency when denominated in goods and services drops. Price is an objective measure. Value, on the other hand, is necessarily subjective, else nobody would transact.
