I've always envisioned a successful AGI capable of moving in a robot body as having a structure evolved via selective breeding to be analogous to the human neurological schema, e.g. a basic neural network for each collection of servos connected to a brain composed of several distinct parts separately developed. I wrote some code and ran some experiments earlier this year using purely genetic algorithms, and the results were pretty terrible. I concluded that more traditional learning algorithms would be necessary: evolve a gene that expresses a neural network; train with a learning algorithm for some set number of epochs; evaluate for fitness; cull, breed, mutate, add new random genes; repeat. Haven't gotten around to implementing all those algorithms yet, though, so it remains a theoretical methodology.
