You know, the frankness, reminds me of Hawaii where I grew up. People are very frank about race. Casual comments there, could get you fired on the mainland lol.

I think the best term is "insular". There are things we Westerners do that offend Chinese, like in some cases eating food with our hands. Think it's silly to pick up a bao or a chicken leg with chopsticks to eat it? You won't after getting crazy stares for using your hand(s) and I learned this at a 99 Ranch here in the US (heavily Asian area). In the US, the classes are very insular. the middle class doesn't mix with the working class, the upper class holds everyone else in contempt, etc. Plus the racial thing where you'll get some hell for not keeping to your own race. So you've got people who've been around only their own culture/people all their lives, and for whom the US/West have been sort of "the enemy" within living memory ... don't worry if there's a bit of friction here and there.

@fullmindstorm I'm developing salt-and-pepper hair and wear my hair very short, so I call my grey hairs my "Obama hairs" lol. They keep me from getting carded!

Oh yeah, the "must be foreigner to teach foreign language" that's kind of laugh. Considering some of the accents some of 'em have. It goes both ways, too. You've got an uphill battle if you're white and want to become an expert at something Asian like being a sushi chef. etc.
