I'd love to retire to japan if I could hack the language but in my mid-50s I think I'm too old to make the change well, but I grew up in Hawaii which is kind of an interesting case.... it's about 1/2 the cost of living in Hawaii, if you're local and live like a local, as opposed to San Jose California where I am now. And if anything it's become an even more Japanese place than when I left. So it's English-speaking, but you can "dial" up or down how "Japanese" you want to live. For instance, the version of Buddhism I follow is big in Hawaii. I remember the old days, traditional houses didn't have "aircon" in Hawaii, the way the house is designed you don't need it.
