  2. I think you may be missing a major point. Chris Hedges has noted that when a nation turns fascist, there's a great looking-back at a supposedly glorious past, and past achievements, whether real or not, and past grudges are brought up and amplified. You see the construction of statues of past ideal heroes that fit the fascists' ideals and this is seen everywhere fascism has occurred. Even in the US South, all those statues of Confederate generals that were in the news recently, Hedges notes, were all erected very recently. They were not holdovers left from the Civil War, but put up in recent times by the kind of people who are now teaching US school children that slavery was good for black people.
