In the US, college only makes sense if you come from enough wealth that it doesn't matter if you go to college. For 99% of us, college doesn't make you any more money over your lifetime, you end up with non-dischargable debt, and there's a huge chance you'll end up working in a field that doesn't use your degree at all. It's a huge scam and I'm very happy to see colleges closing.

@JDMNINJA851 Because we're a shithole country where empathy and the concept of "we live in a society" are just about outlawed.
28
Capitalism. It doesn't matter how many people die, what matters is profit.
18
@Porky Minch Is Malaysia starting wars all over the world? No. Poverty well, how many homeless do they have? (Answer, very few to none). Economy's plenty good enough, any tech savvy person knows tons of tech stuff is made there, plus it's a nice tropical area with farming etc. Trading? See above.

@gbart7857 Good point. Until WWII, to the average American, "hunting rifle" would have meant a lever-action.
14
Bingo. That and a kick start on a motorcycle. And yes, you can learn to chew gum and deal with a stick shift on the 405 freeway in SoCal in one of their epic traffic jams.

With about 30 empty houses for every homeless man, woman, and child, I'd say it's The US can't nationalize houses fast enough

Seriously. I'm in California and California born and I keep looking into this or that area in flyover country and holy fug it's expensive.

Capitalism is doing something it's good at: falling flat on its face.
7
If you're living on the standard American diet you are pre-diabetic no ifs about it.

They're affordable, can be made very accurate, relatively easy to work on, parts everywhere, and they're good enough for the military. The AR15 was developed to be a bit more friendly to people who are smaller than the stereotypical 6-foot tall soldier, mainly Vietnamese and Korean troops but that translates well to women, youths, older folks, etc. The M1 is fairly large and heavy and a bit intimidating so if you have to get up to speed shooting the AR's a "friendlier" choice. BTW only the full-auto ones are true "assault rifles" and even then, only the M16A1's I learned on would do actual full auto and even then they taught us to try for 3-round bursts. Full-full auto is really wasteful.

I remember the spam key....

@swampy Indeed. The hardware guys are all going away - my boss is a hardware guy and he's 70. He's constantly saving the bacon of young guys who slept through physics class. I'm a hardware tech myself and the jobs are just gone.

@batrarohit1 I'm in Silicon Valley and it's well-known here that if someone is driving for Uber or doing Door Dash etc. it's because they're desperate.

This times a million. In Germany companies have unions and have a union member on their board of directors - it's the law. They have a system where their gov't gives money to the companies who then pay the workers the same or at worst 80%, so no one becomes homeless, loses their house etc. And needless to say they've got a national health service. In USA, one time payment of $1200 if you're lucky and that's it. I think I might have the rona but there's no testing I can find and I"m in "Silicon Valley" there's just nothing. And I have to keep working so I have to go out most days.
4
This. Plus they want you all to buy a $500+ watch or gadget and make it become medically required along with your $2000 a month insulin.
4
@Vandicoup I'd say about that, it WAS beautiful until the tooty-frooty colors lol.
3
We always called it Papa's John AKA toilet pizza.
3
Geez dude at least get some skates, the Amish use them and they're a wonder for your midsection.
3
I ate it all! Seriously, growing up in Hawaii, I ate tons of the stuff, and I can tell you that as my go-to markets are Asian ones here on the mainland, SPAM is alive and well, along with TEMPT, TREET, and others I'd not touch. SPAM isn't going anywhere.

PayPal has been a crooked organization from the very start.

If you go low-carb, you can solve a lot of this. What worries me is some kind of control exerted where you have to follow the AHA recommended diet which is high in sugars and starches and that's a diet that will make you type II in your later years.
2
US thinks of the people all right, it's just that in the US you're not "people" unless you're rich.

When it's raining it's not too good. Mainly you need to go slow. But it's actually less bad than riding a motorcycle in the rain.
2
@cowboyx9380 WD-40 can do anything. I've not only used it as a cutting oil, but it's a great starting fluid in cold weather.
2
There's a Jollibee just a little too far from me for it to be an easy trip, but I keep meaning to get over there and try it. I want to try the chicken and the sweet spaghetti, probably too sweet for my preference but I want to try it.

I was a 70s kid so no video games, but I knew they had M16's in the Army so it was no surprise when they handed me one. And walked me through that Oh-so-slow and deliberate Army way, exactly how to form the correct shooting position. Now, being left-handed and right-eyed, I had a shooting position of my own I'd come up with as a kid and was a dead shot with a pellet gun but that position was crazy. When I learned the proper way, snuggled up to that M16, I felt as comfy as a cat in front of the fireplace. I think my Basic Training was 'way easier than it must have been for earlier generations, because the M16 and its ammo were light and easy to carry.

Same here I've not owned a car for 12 years

Top 10% in the US are living longer than ever, bottom 60% or so are plummeting in life expectancy.
2
As more places that are remote, in flood plains or in/near forests that burn (forests in the US West tend to be those with a "fire ecology" where periodic fires are part of their life cycle) the cost of insurance naturally goes up.

They're gonna lose in the franchise wars. Maybe by then we'll know how to use the 3 seashells.

Fake olive oil goes way back. Mark Twain wrote about it. About the only way to get real stuff is to get verifiable California produced oil or go for super artisan stuff.
1
It's why we need a socialist revolution in the US.
1
Hahahahahahahah! No, because Texas is a shithole and California is the 5th or 6th largest economy in the world.
1
I'm pretty sure if you ask most other Potemkin type 3rd world nations they'll tell you they're the greatest in the world too.

Basically, 15MPH is the critical speed. Under 15MPH, accidents are minor, above it, they get bad. My own theory is that humans, running, can get up to a top speed of 15MPH so we're built to take crashes up to that speed. I've also noticed that if I hurry, or if I ride like I'm just pooping along, there's not that much difference in how fast I get where I'm going. So take it easy!
1
Yeah, because 2021 is totally gonna be better than 2020...

Delivery services are huge ripoffs for the restaurants. Check and see if they have their own delivery people - they often do.

In a word: Well. Where I am, there's an Amazon Hub to take returns to, plus they can be taken to the post office, fedex, or ups, for a small charge. Make sure the pack the return really well (this is why I always save all tags etc on items) because it will probably go to someone else!
1
@Raymondstu Get some decent panniers.
1
Capitalism requires the bottom 10% or so of the population to be destitute and miserable. Marx talked about this. George Carlin talked about this. George Orwell talked about this. Everyone's talked about this...
1
For Amazon you can use your local Amazon locker. 7-11s have them, Whole Foods, etc. If you're lucky you've got an Amazon Hub in your town.
1
Seriously. I live in an area with lots of Asians and they're in cars and I'm on a bike.
1
This is expected in the US which is the pinnacle of Western civilization where everyone is an atomized in-DUH-vidual with freedumb.
1
Fewer and fewer people could afford cars before this virus came along. For 90% of Americans, we never recovered from the crash of 08.

The 8 items or less line? How old is this film??

Do everything on paper and keep all records on paper. You're welcome.

I lived in AZ for a while and .... it was cheaper to move back to CA. I also knew some people and was surprised to find them in CA also, as they'd moved about the same time I did. "It's like getting a pay raise and rent paid for free!" they told me.
1
Hardly anyone can afford to own and operate a car any more. Why do you think bicycle sales are booming?
