  7. I went to high school for a few years in Kahuku, an old sugar town. The mill was still operating and there was a sort of required field trip to get a full tour of the mill, because traditionally if you were a good student you got to work in the mill. The poverty I experienced in the 70s growing up in Hawaii was something no one born after 1980 would be able to relate to unless they served in some particularly dismal part of the world in the Peace Corps.

  9. A friend of mine is Alaska born and raised, grew up out in the boonies so he knows how to operate every kind of heavy machinery etc. He's even inherited his father's big ol' place. He does NOT want to go back there. He likes California here very much and while he goes back to Alaska for family business from time to time he's told me point-blank that he really likes California.

  11. Cruelty to animals is a big part of "local" culture. Keep in mind that 100 years ago, cats and dogs were food animals. Chicken fighting with those metal spurs is popular. Reddit is full of posts in r/hawaii of people seeing dogs kept outdoors in small cages and never let out, etc.

  12. You know, tons of people from the US are retiring in Mexico, and one of the reasons is they're better able to afford health care there. There's one town, called Merida, in Mexico that's almost like a "Little America" with stores like CostCo. in fact, Merida would be an excellent place for you to visit and do a video of.

  13. There's green sand on Oahu too. The beaches around Diamond Head have some, and when I was a kid and we lived on (Dunn Dunn Dunnnnnnn!) Portlock Road, we played on a beach that was pure green sand. There's green sand on the beach by Kaiser Estate too.

  18. Hot water for showers is easy - I've rigged up a long, dark green, garden hose and put it on a hanger where the sung hits it. Put a nozzle on the end to control water flow. I was in a rural area here in California and I put a deck of sorts in front of the shitty old trailer I was living in. There were too few people around to worry about privacy, so I'd take hot showers right there on my deck. But yeah water is rain catchment or you truck it in.

  26. In the free healthcare, anyone in the US can get free healthcare, it's called Medicaid, and there are free clinics and things. Due to poor life decisions like studying electronics, I have a very low income so I have Medi-Cal which is California's version of Medicaid. There are also organizations, churches, etc., plus if it's a situation that calls for going to the ER you just go and they kind of have to fix you up, then worry about payment later. So the immigrants aren't getting some special deal with regard to health care.

I saw a video on YouTube where a guy set a car on fire, it was caught on a Ring camera or something, showed a guy on a bike stopping to, from the looks of it, put a little gasoline or Coleman fuel or lighter fluid, anyway something flammable, on a car, basically on the folded windshield wiper area, and I was thinking, "That's not gonna do anything" but sure enough, that small amount of fluid, what you could carry in a drink cup, was enough to burn and destroy the car (small SUV by the looks of it) so it was a successful carbecue.

  41. That surfboard that broke in half is easily 50 years old so no great loss. Foodland in Hawaii is like Safeway on the mainland. Kind of the big major supermarket chain. I worked for them a bit as a young adult. As always, if you insist on eating like a mainlander, food's gonna be expensive and if you eat like a local it will cost a lot less. The catch here is I don't know how to learn to eat like a local unless you grow up in Hawaii among local people.

The crash of 2008 was bad but to me it was not as bad but like most others, here it is 2025 and I'm still only making maybe a third of what I did before the crash of 2008.

  52. I'm glad to see e-bikes because while I'm a purist and ride a regular bike, e-bikes are getting people out on 2 wheels enjoying getting around, getting to know their neighborhoods and neighbors, and I think a fair number of them will get regular bikes for the exercise.

  61. I'm so glad I am able to go to my local Japanese market (Nijiya) and guy green tea from around Mt. Fuji. It's cheap consumer grade stuff but .... Mt. Fuji! It's a legendary mountain. I even had a Fuji bicycle when I was in college and that thing took me everywhere. I grew up knowing and revering Mt. Fuji because who hasn't? (who grew up in Hawaii haha).

And those of us in the West are like, Huh? But the British call us Yanks, all of us, and often disparagingly. Yet, to simplify things I might tell a Brit I'm a Yank to ease communication (although I'm a Californian and I might say that). There also is/was a US Army newspaper called YANK, the other was Stars And Stripes.

  64. I got by as a young adult living in "rooming houses" where you'd rent a room, lights out at 10PM, no overnight guests, lots of rules but a solid place to live for a young worker/student. I'm not sure how many of these old style places are still around.
