Sodium-ion batteries, which swap sodium for the lithium that powers most EVs and devices like cell phones and laptops today. Sodium-ion batteries could squeeze their way into some corners of the battery market as soon as the end of this year, and they could be huge in cutting costs for EVs. May 11, 2023 TechnologyReview

Nuclear battery produces power for 50 years without needing to charge Beijing-based Betavolt said its nuclear battery is the first in the world to realise the miniaturisation of atomic energy, placing nickel-63 isotopes into a module smaller than a coin. Betavolt says its battery could power mobile phones that never need to be charged and drones that can fly forever The company said the next-generation battery had already entered the pilot testing stage and will eventually be mass produced for commercial applications like phones and drones. “Betavolt atomic energy batteries can meet the needs of long-lasting power supply in multiple scenarios, such as aerospace, AI equipment, medical equipment, microprocessors, advanced sensors, small drones and micro-robots,” the firm said in a press release. Sodium-ion is the big thing for car batteries right now . Well atleast in China that is

Yeah they had it 50 years ago This company can put its battery on a coin You are probably one of those great scientists tinkering away in your lab as the world passes you by We use to have lifetime guarantees on the products we purchased Now we are lucky if we get a 1 year warranty

Shale Oil was borrow money explore and drill. Where the depletion rates are so horrendous These Oil Companies had to borrow and explore drill 👉 drill sweet spots to keep up with production numbers. Where even with the run up of oil prices from a few years back. These companies still didn’t pay off all the debt they owe

Americans are once again late to the game 👇 Sodium batteries: is China sparking a new revolution in the electric vehicle industry? The EV industry is set to be the first to benefit as Chinese companies start mass-producing sodium-ion batteries The easy access to sodium worldwide means production of the new batteries is much easier than the existing lithium-ion models

It’s already happening we had 50 years of people going the cheaper option route That’s not going to change especially in todays world 👇 The cost of a Na-ion battery cell is expected to be around $40-80/kWh compared to an average of $120/kWh for a Li-ion cell. Na-ion batteries are safer (operating temperature range, stability), and have faster charging times and longer cycle lives. Their energy density is lower, making them bulkier and heavier. Energy Post

Not to mention the snowflakes who are the ones most likely to buy this technology 👇 It looks like the coming years are now. Last fall, CleanTechnica took note when the Swedish battery maker Northvolt hooked up its sodium-ion battery with the Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD. Now here comes the US startup Acculon adding more fuel to the sodium fire. If all goes according to plan, Acculon expects production of its new sodium-ion batteries to begin at the pilot scale this spring, and hit the scale of 2 gigawatt-hours by the middle of this year. “Importantly, sodium-ion batteries are free from conflict minerals or premium input materials like lithium carbonate or cobalt, increasing their sustainability profile among advanced battery chemistries,” Acculon stated in a press release on January 4. Then there is the supply chain issue. China has the world’s supply of battery grade lithium in a hammerlock and is not shy about using its near monopoly to its advantage. Companies in other parts of the world are desperate to find a work around that will let them defeat China’s near total control of the lithium supply chain. Just last month, Northvolt announced it has developed a sodium battery that completely eliminates reliance on most of the components that go into a traditional lithium ion battery — not only lithium but also cobalt, nickel, manganese, but also the graphite needed for the anode. China controls nearly 98% of all the battery grade graphite available today. To paraphrase Fox Mulder of X Files fame, “Sodium will set you free.” CleanTechnica

Future Sodium Ion Batteries Could Be Ten Times Cheaper for Energy Storage They also do not have practical material limits. There is no shortage of salt or soda ash. The United States has about 90% of the world’s readily mined reserves of soda ash. Wyoming has 47 billion tons of mineable soda ash in the Green River basin. There would be hundreds of TWH of power storage from each billion tons of soda ash. Based on material costs of $4 per kWh there could be $8 to $10 per kWh sodium ion batteries in the future. This would be ten times cheaper than energy storage batteries today. NextBigFuture

Dec 29, 2023 06:13 PM BUSINESS Chinese Carmakers Begin Mass Rollout of Sodium-Ion Battery-Powered EVs What’s new: Two Chinese state-owned carmakers have begun mass-producing mini electric vehicles (EVs) powered by sodium-ion batteries, considered a possible alternative to the lithium-ion batteries currently used in most EVs. The first batch of the Huaxianzi passenger EVs equipped with HiNa Battery Technology Co. Ltd.’s sodium-ion batteries, rolled off the production line of Yiwei, an Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp. Ltd. brand, on Wednesday, Hina said in a statement. Large-scale deliveries are set to begin in January. CaiXin

From what I read to get 1 ton of refined rare earths? It takes 2000 tons of toxic wastewater

Yes the negative for Sodium-Ion is the low energy density and the bulkier battery The advantage it’s more environmentally friendly, You get more charges per battery, Cheaper cost, , more reliable during cold weather, and we know Lithium batteries were burning up after they got flooded. I guess we will find out if that happens to Sodium-Ion batteries As last month, there are 2 companies in China who had EVs coming off the assembly line that are using Sodium-Ion batteries

Even worse than that these companies are talking a pivot to Natural Gas Would have been better to have just left that Shale oil in the ground and waited for the world to run out of oil 👇 US Shale Could Erase Debt by 2024, Freeing Up Cash for Gas Pivot Industry to make record $200 billion this year: Deloitte Decade of shale losses wiped out in just three years US shale producers are on course to make nearly $200 billion this year, enough to make the industry debt-free by 2024 and potentially fund a pivot toward more natural gas production, according to Deloitte LLP.
