  1. This was, is and always will be the greatest wound to western civilization. The conquerors of an empire become the rulers of that empire. The Ottomans were therefore the rulers of ‘rum’, (eastern) Rome, making Rome a Muslim empire, which went from having a pontiff, to a caliph. So the Sultan was also a Caesar (Qaiser).
