@irreverend_ It's more the fact that they sold off the existing social housing and just didn't replace it. But that was by design really.

Residential care has been bought up by asset management companies in a big way in the UK, their purpose is to "streamline" the business ( i.e. cut down the front line care ) whilst maximizing the profit ( i.e. rinsing ) care home residents of their life savings and assets. This is happening all across the UK thus shifting the onus from government provided care to asset management provided care which is basically just shifting more wealth to the rich. You're talking companies like Legal and General here, on the surface they look like they legit care ( buying and building new care homes ) but if you dig a little deeper they're in fact one of Europe's largest asset management companies. As the Americans love to say... Go figure.

Our short-termist political parties won't address that question as it's too far into the future. I agree though this will be a problem down the road.

The middle class buy to let crew thought they could get on the rent as income ladder over the last few decades and bought en masse for this reason too, but now they're starting to realise that it's going to be taken back from them ( it's already started happening ) and then we're ALL going to end up worse off. End of life care has become a scam too, care homes have been bought up by assent management companies with the sole purpose of rinsing the elderly of their assets and savings. I mean, we need some mechanism of taking some of that wealth back from the rich or they're just going to clean up and leave us all up the creek, and it ain't even started yet. The question is though, how can that realistically happen?

@crayontom9687 Other countries do this. Grandparents can look after kids too and financially it makes more sense. It's not a question of how though in this country, more the fact that most people just don't want to.

@garyseconomics I bought the kindle and the hard copy. On another note, what year did you study at LSE? I used to run tech at the Quad venue there, I'm sure we've chatted in the old Three Tuns bar?

The care home industry has been sold on to asset management ( private equity ) companies now. They're just cleaning up in the UK.
