I think a lot of this is because a hobby is not about monetary gain. If, for example, you take a hobby ( saying music, art or a craft ) that you love, gain some success and then try and turn it into a full time job ( or it turns itself into a full time job ) The dynamics of that "hobby" have now change completely. Suddenly it's no longer something you do for fun it's something that you have to do to make a living. And it becomes a chore. Even more so if someone spots your skill and then employs you in their business. Suddenly it's no longer your hobby, it's their dream and what was fun now also becomes a chore. I've seen this happen quite a few times with friends who've monetised their hobbies. As soon as you try and monetise it the dynamic completely shifts.

I grew up in a Northern factory ( and ex mining ) town where there was a distinct class divide between managers and workers to the point where some workers would actual reject a promotion up to management level because it was seen as "going to the other side." The workers who did "go to the other side" seemed to turn into absolute controling pricks that people hated too. It was almost expected you took on that role. A self fulfilling prophecy if you will. Workers didn't respect management, management didn't respect workers. It was a strange culture for sure, but I'm sure it's one that's not limited to the North of England.

@pauls3075 I'm speaking from experience too, I took my own hobby and have made it my life's work on quite a few different levels ( what some would call a portfolio career ) I also now lecture in the subject so I've been very lucky. In some respects it has made it a chore though and the dynamics have absolutely changed. We're lucky, I know quite a few friends who have gone this route and it hasn't worked out for them at all. So saying a blanket statement like you're wrong is not the case at all, there are outliers here for sure.
