  1. Your story rings true for me also, 23 years in the Navy ending up as a Chief, they gave me a degree and now I have a good career in the admittedly awful NHS. But at the time it saved me from a circle of self destruction in my early 20s. Taught me so much about being self sufficient and grateful for the opportunities life can bring. On a negative note I don't think the armed forces are what they were, the changes were coming in maybe 10 or 15 years ago and have snowballed since, obediently following the whims of social fashion.
