  3.  @GRD1618  the problem is simple, if intruders have the idea that a house owner is armed, they are just as more likely to be armed themselves. This raises the stakes.

  4. @G D  firing a weapon at another human being isn't as easy as people think. Especially for normal folk. Like as not people hesitate and disaster of some form ensues. Arming the general population is a poor method of controlling crime. Anyway I suspect we shan't agree here and the discussion is probably fruitless.
