  2. I suppose, playing devils advocate, that these countries would blame Britain et al for the slow decline by hampering their ability to succeed. I'm not sure how much evidence there would be for such a concerted effort. For my part, Africans seem to only respect power, usually at the end of a gun. There seems to be little hunger for aspects of western life which might be seen on a Simon Webb video yesterday on white privilege. Things like being on time, perfectionism, strong work ethic, forward thinking, family, etc. When I was in South Sudan several years ago I remember an elderly refugee and ex teacher, of the conflict there after the Muslim uprisings telling me that he wished the British would come back. He saw the entry of the Chinese into Africa as another colonial episode on a scale far more efficient and insidious than anything that came before.
