  1. I served a few years ago in South Sudan another british colony which has seen its fortunes stripped much more effectively since Independence. The south of the country largely contained the educated people and suffered horrendously since independence at the hands of the Muslim north. Many of the local people employed by the UN mission there are refugees from this conflict. The older generation often can be found working as unskilled labour in the mission buildings. They are often teachers and other professional folk. They would speak to us and say how they wished for the British to come back to Sudan and take over again. They tell stories of how shortly after independence the ruling clans fought over everything, stripped and sold everything that wasnt nailed down and even that wasnt an inconvenient barrier often times. They quite literally destroyed the infrastructure and ability to properly run the country efficiently. The biggest worry the locals say is the influx of Chinese "investment" who are stripping the country far more efficiently and ruthlessly than ever the British managed.
