  1. With grade inflation affecting Home Grown candidates on the one hand and then an open door policy for those qualified from Africa etc etc theres no wonder we have a problem. I work in laboratory services in a busy city hospital. We have gaps everywhere and recently filled 2 of those at the band 6 level (specialist) with 2 blokes from Kenya of all places...directly recruited. Neither of which appeared to know anything that would naturally apply even to the trainee level let alone specialist. This mentoring of them has gone on for 6 months now and they are little more useful than when they first arrived. They make mistakes constantly and need supervision for all but the most basic tasks. Several of us have complained to the band 8 managers who assure us this is down to the language differences. Basic laboratory training is clearly missing here and intelligence appears also a factor where they simply struggle to pick up the necessary skills to deal with patient blood results this includes blood transfusions!
