I did 23 years in the medical services of the Navy. Retired from such last year.
In 2020 we were treated to a zoom online visit by Captain Steven Henry MBE, a co chair of the army BAME network as part of the madness following the death of Floyd.
He wanted to tell us about his lived experiences of life in the UK seeing as he had Jamaican ancestry.
He built up a picture of insults and slights which were open to all manner of interpretation with no context. His crowning experience however which he built up during the session was that of an incident on a train from london to Peterborough the previous year. In it he describes being sat on the busy train and made room for a white bloke to sit down who appeared to have ignored the invitation, Henry tells us that no words were spoken it was performed with body language which Henry instantly interpreted to mean "racist" and insisted on using the egregious microaggression word. He used this ridiculous incident to paint the picture that the UK still has far to go. I was seething at this attitude.
Later he decided to pick on me out of the group of a dozen on my table to hear about my thoughts and I could barely contain my anger at this.
I decided to ask him about the train incident and why he instantly assumes racial connotations. He replied that he gets this "all the time" and that was answer enough. I asked him had any white people ever held a door for him, or let him out at a busy junction in the car, or generally shown human courtesy to him? Of course he relies yes, so I ask why then are you choosing to pick nebulous incidents which may or may not have racial intent to describe the distance this country has yet to go? He waffles about inherent inequality for a time, to which I point out that he holds a MBE. The session ends quickly after this.
Later I was approached by one of my line managers, a major of east asian descent who politely asked me if I was "alright", that people on my table had commented on my "discomfort" with the discussion. I informed her that I took much discomfort from the discussion as led by Capt Henry. She was not present at the discussion table so I told her what I had said. She replied "you have given me much to think about" and left me be.
I retired 8 months later.
I should point out here that I am from Ireland, I love this country and always since a child admired how much it has done for the world. Coming from Ireland I had many moments which I could interpret as "hate" in the modern thought of today, no doubt some were but they are a vanishing minority, most are simply "banter" such as being called a potato picker, paddy, muck eater, etc etc all fine they received banter in return and it washes over me, mostly because these "incidents" are vastly dwarfed by the incidents of common respect, opportunity and decency I have received here in Britain. I am ever thankful for it and pay no mind to the rest.
My boys are being brought up BRITISH but aware of their ancestry in Ireland and more than anything else to feel proud of the country they live in.

It honestly beggars belief (mine anyway), that we allow, tolerate, encourage and, in many cases, vote for leaders, institutions, media, justice systems etc that appear to be actively beavering away at denigrating, guilt lading, shame loading, and destruction of the principles that makes this country and the West, the very special, rare and unique places in a very dark world.

Jennifer....if you read this, I dont care anymore about the problems of people that mean us harm! On an individual level they may be grateful initially, its amazing how that seems to sour very quickly when they realise this ISN'T the land of milk and honey, at some point the handout and housing isnt enough for them, they have to involve themselves with the everyday struggle that ordinary people have to put up with.
As a block they are destructive to our country, Jennifer says its women and children, it wont be, it will be gangs and gangs of young men as seen in countless other situations.
I dont care anymore Jennifer, if you do, then go there and sort them out with whatever means you can muster, leave them there in the land that they apparently wish to die for. I dont care anymore, very few countries would care for us in the UK if things were reversed, BELIEVE THAT.

I dont understand this Afghan relocation at all. I served 3 tours there and the fact of the matter is that these people dont deserve this opportunity. Take interpreters as an example, They were paid very well for "working" with the UK forces. They were in the majority untrustworthy and especially in the final years we spent much of our time wondering if they were going to attack us or dick us with giving information to the Tali's.
As for our end of Afghanistan there, the country rolled over when we left in a matter of days, they didnt want us there, if they wanted our way of life they didnt want to fight for it! (See ukraine for real opposition).
So I'm left saying this, they didnt want to fight for our way of life in their country, they instead want to come to ours where they dont have to work for it, or sacrifice for it, or maintain it. These people are parasites of the highest order. They are no friends of the UK I can say that much at the least.
I especially detest our stupid politicians such as Tom Tugendhat, saying constantly that we owe these people a debt! WE DO NOT! Tugendhat makes great noises about how he was in Afghanistan and understood being in the forces, he must have served in very different places to mine and perhaps a different services to boot. He is a snake.

I'm Irish myself, came here 28 years ago, during that time I've "endured" plenty that could be considered "racist" these days, my general intelligence tells me that 90% of that was done in jest and for fun and i took it as such, the other 10% while more overt and a bit hurty I shrugged off. The reason why I shrugged it off? Because it is massively outweighed by the times that people in the UK have helped me, shown me kindness, supported me. I spent 23 of the years here in the Navy serving the country, married a lovely girl and have 2 sons that I bring up to be proud of this country. There are hurty words said to people and sometimes actions, but they are largely done by people that weren't worth your time in the first place. Grow a skin and be grateful for the ones that are worth it, emulate them, look to improve yourself not looking for excuses.

The point about the medical employment aspect of immigration rings out with me, I work in the NHS, my wife was an ITU nurse for 25 years and has since gone into Nurse Education. We see all sides of this in our house. This isnt just about nursing, its all aspects of the NHS staffing.
Here are some basics from my point of view:
1. The NHS is riven with "medical professionals" from Africa and Asia who were trained to a standard appropriate to those areas within the means available to those areas, these are the ones with "verifiable" competencies, there are plenty more in a competency "grey area".
There are also societal, historical and cultural problems associated.
2. On the other hand we hold our "indigenous" people in the UK to incredibly (in my opinion unreasonably) high standards before they are allowed to practice. The idea of medical practice being a Vocation of compassion aligned with a good sense of safety and "apprenticeship" appears lost now in especially the nursing education sector.
The two differing systems meet and the differences are starkly opposed. The idea i suppose is that Number 2 will make up for, and through some form of osmosis "bring up" the standard of Number 1. The reality is the other way round, Number 1 does what it likes, how it likes, and will complain bitterly about perceived ill treatment if Number 2 tries to get an honest, professional day out of the vast majority of number 1.
Here's a further reality - the NHS management from the level of Band 7 to the Trust Chiefs are not on the side of Number 2, mostly because they are afraid of number 1. We are told in very much other words and actions from management to "accept mediocrity" .

I'm an Irishman that's lived here in the UK for 28 years, I remember my childhood schooling and learning about WW2 and beyond, even in Ireland in the height of the 1970s enormous respect was given to the Queen. She, for me anyway, represented a way thinking, a resilience, a proudness, that these days we seem to be taught to be ashamed of, guilty for, something to be financially, and morally atoned for, till end of days.

I suppose, playing devils advocate, that these countries would blame Britain et al for the slow decline by hampering their ability to succeed. I'm not sure how much evidence there would be for such a concerted effort.
For my part, Africans seem to only respect power, usually at the end of a gun. There seems to be little hunger for aspects of western life which might be seen on a Simon Webb video yesterday on white privilege. Things like being on time, perfectionism, strong work ethic, forward thinking, family, etc.
When I was in South Sudan several years ago I remember an elderly refugee and ex teacher, of the conflict there after the Muslim uprisings telling me that he wished the British would come back. He saw the entry of the Chinese into Africa as another colonial episode on a scale far more efficient and insidious than anything that came before.

I cannot describe just how how much the civvie attitude grips my "such and such". Its everything, being late, feckless behaviour, sloppy work, at times I feel like I work in a primary school with the catty in fighting.
The few who think and act like me keep the place above water.
I went off sick mentally 2 years ago now for a few weeks with it all.
I was told I was being burnt out because of "moral damage". Makes a lot of sense.
The management, when I speak to them say the adjustment from mil to civ is mine to make. I refuse to accept this, refuse! Military people are not "super" or "special", it hasn't been beaten into me to act with professionalism, work hard, be conscientious and want to do the best for people we see. The failure is management and what I call their attitude of "acceptable mediocrity". They thrash the good people, and molly coddle the trouble makers, the lazy, the fraudulent, the malcontents, the agitators.
It sickens me. This all under the crushing weight of over represented "diversity" where we have 4 white men in a dept of 57. I am at the end of my tether with it all so much that I've had to go on night shifts to avoid much of the crap the place is capable of. This is harder workwise but better mentally.
I could write essays on the NHS, all I'll say is this...dont be sick, drive carefully, look after yourself. Don't put your hand out for a visit to a hospital.

On the subject of waste and procurement i see crazy spending in the NHS.
Costs for very basic items is at what I would describe as "wedding level". I hope people know what i mean here, but essentially the NHS, and all other government arms such as the military also pay an absolute premium for items.
There needs to be introduced a "fair fee" law for procurement, no more of this paying £125000 for an industrial off the shelf circuit breaker supplying power to hospital wards, thats one example off the top of my head.
If a company cannot supply at a fair price they lose their contract. Which i might add is the source of the problem, contracts! The government doesnt employ highly skilled negotiators and contract writers, that needs to change, the chumps they have doing it are outclassed at every turn by the corporate negotiators and writers. We miss the things that they certainly do not. The companies dont care they'll sell their goods to the government in any case, we are a high spend, high standard of living country with 70 million people, no market will turn down that revenue even if it is at a fair price.

5k of my households taxation goes to the NHS directly. This according to those tax letters explaining where your money goes that I haven't seen in some time now.
5k a year! Surely I'd get a pretty good package with private insurance for this money? I've never had cause to use the service outside of the birth of my sons.
I work in the NHS myself and the waste is everywhere. The main problem the NHS faces is the demographic that does use it. Taking a walk through AE dept is like stepping into another continent, I work in the laboratory so I see most of the names that come through the system at all points. The amount of shall we say "exotic" names is shocking especially with chronic disease, cancer, genetic disease, blood disorders, and reproductive assistance programmes.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that immigration is a huge cost to the NHS. This also affects the staff side, we haven't taken on a white bloke in my dept for over 10 years! The place is being held up by a handful of close to retirement white blokes. The last interview we held the band 8 manager admitted that HR had passed on 300 applications to her for review, all from the likes of Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda etc. She's as woke as they come but even she found her convictions tested when faced with this set of reviews. The rest we've taken on are a mix of the following:
Sickly, unprofessional, unqualified or qualifications unable to be verified, malcontented, unwilling to work to the rate and standard required, constantly pregnant, morale vacuums, prickly, I honestly could go on but I have 10 mins left in peace before I have to face another day of this.

This is at best, a grotesque example of positive action at work, or at worst, a deplorable example of positive discrimination.
The underlying thought that "we must" elevate these people to the positions highest in the land over real talent is astoundingly stupid.
I ask myself this, is there any rush in anywhere else outside of the west to elevate our people into the highest positions in the lands of say, Ghana, Pakistan, China, Brazil, the list is endless and we need to take their example to heart.

Take some examples, The Expanse is a far future tv show with a lot of diversity. It made sense, it wasnt contrived or put one group over another in some batshit hierarchy. It was natural and felt in place.
Another example, the Star Wars recent movies, same sort of premise, far future blah blah, but it did the diversity aspect very poorly indeed, destroyed the original characters and placed very poor examples of the diversity downplaying and denigrating anything white male normal.
It's the latter that fans are seeing with this new adaptation in LotR

I spent 23 years in the forces and recognise nothing this woman alleges in the military. None of it is challenged by the BBC, no proof provided by the lady, and it all reads very strangely. Swastikas, KKK, Confederate flags, NONE of this is recognisable to me from my time in the forces. It reads like a training manual from the BLM movement and stinks of grievance culture.
My time saw plenty of banter of course and I got a fair but myself as an Irishman. But for the very small amount of meaningless "hate" I received I got orders of magnitude more opportunity, fairness, and camaraderie. I choose to look at that. I strongly refute the words this woman has put across about the UK forces, they are just words with no substance, evidence or challenge from the BBC. The reality is, many others from minority groups do very well in the military, work hard and have the same attitude as myself, gratitude for the opportunity. It lifted me out of a life of petty crime and it does this for many many more without fear or favour.
Stop running these stories BBC! They are baseless and do no good.

Again it has come down on to matter of numbers in power I think. I'm really not banging any drum for the tories here, but they are the only credible party at the moment to choose from. I dont particularly trust Priti and Boris at all, you only have to see how they issue strong words on the meagre numbers coming on boats across the channel, yet blind siding us with the numbers coming in from countries that wish our society harm, through current LEGAL means. It comes down to competence and yes that really is a sliding scale as it applies to politicians. For instance I quite liked many of the views put forward by UKIP, at that time giving all things as equal, would I want them in power running the economy, services, industry etc, probably not they had some good people scattered in there but on the whole they were a one issue party like the damned SNP. See how well Scotland is going these days with SNP running the country, they're going to snap and splinter and fail eventually not on the One Issue but with everything else. Competence.

I work in the NHS Laboratory services having come from 23 years in the Armed Forces. I have been in this job since i retired from Forces last year. I never thought that after all i had seen serving the country that something like the NHS could break me. I was wrong.
I am surrounded by colleagues that frequently display feckless idiocy, borderline malpractice, managers who are distant, ignorant and lack basic skills in leadership and supervision. Its also going without saying that "my face isn't reflected where i work" to borrow a term from the nu-speak. There are 47 in my section just 4 of which are white males - for the rest - overwhelmingly ethnic, overwhelmingly female. I can deal with all of that if it werent for the constant displays i listed above.
The straw broke for me last week, I challenged a colleagues unacceptable behaviour (a junior colleague that is a visible minority) where she has gone missing for 40 mins from the dept, it was very busy and no senior management were on the floor. When said colleague came back i asked politely if she had returned from lunch, replied one word "No". I pushed and asked her where she had been, one word replied "Toilet". I pushed again and asked why she was gone for 40 mins, now the true disdain and malice presented itself when she replied in a terse, dripping with disdain one word answer "PERIODS".
She reported me to the band 8 manager who took me to her office, many truths were spoken and to cut a longer story short - walked out of the dept after informing the manager that i didn't feel safe to handle patient results. This incident was only the straw that broke the camels back. I am now awaiting assessment for mental health issues.

The Leadership, be it Government, charity, corporate, religious, institutional, are all infected with people that believe the world exists "as one". The sad fact is this in an idea that is hundreds of years away trying to be brought about in the Now. Aside from elements of the west, the vast majority of the world is nothing like "at one" with the rest of the world and has no intention of being for a very long time. In the matters of economic, cultural, religious, military etc, this is so.

Our politicians are only that in name anymore, really they are jumped up civil servants who enact the orders of, and push responsibility to, the whims of others, others whom have very conflicting and unfriendly views about us.
This was a habit our political class got into with being the in the EU, Tony Benn MP said as much 40 years or more ago.
Push the blame onto these "faceless, nowhere people", we've heard it all by now....UNHCR, EU commission, EU courts of justice, all our politicians do is point at these things and shrug their shoulders. We have to get leaders back to those who want to make decisions and resist this global government idea.

Beautifully said Simon. I see it in my work place in the NHS, my dept hasn't hired a white man in over 10 years. We have only hired black, or south Asian women or men. From my seeing of the thing, they are one or more of the following: feckless, lazy, unprofessional, under qualified, grudge bearing, sickly...I could go on, but seem to think they work in a cat food factory rather than a hospital. They come and go, more get hired and time spent training them wasted, they leave, and the circle goes round and round.
We recently advertised for 2 Band 6 jobs, the band 8 manager we have tells me that HR passed on 300 applications to her for review, she says that every application is more of the same, the majority directly from African countries. Now our manager is female, white, and paid up fully to the right on age we live in here in the UK. Even she has started to feel the cognitive gears start to snarl up when faced with the realities. I suggested that she ought to select on the basis of VERIFIABLE qualifications and experience. That's all that is required.

Daithi, I have the same set of conceptions on the continent, mine bearing from my military service which took me to the continent on several occasions.
South Sudan particularly sits in my mind, what used to have a passable professional class with a basic educational system and some mobility economically. It is now a desolate wasteland not out of place in a science fiction story. The place riven with tribal fighting and corruption. It is now policed by the equally feckless United Nations, a more useless organisation there never was. It is a tax on rich nations, for every soldier a country provides the providing country is paid approx $120 per day, the "peacekeepers" being made up of the likes of the Pakistani, Mongolian, Angolan countries. The UN sorts precisely NOTHING out where they go, there is no incentive to sorting anything because if its sorted, the peacekeepers are not required and the money being paid could stop! The very definition of a "self licking lolly".
As part of group of UK peacekeeping and engineers (a very very rare thing, as the UN hates the UK being involved in their business) we achieved more in 6 months than thr previous 10 years of the UN. Figure that! What an awful indictment for this ridiculous organisation.

Agreed also, I found myself at a crossroads in life in my early 20s. I was doing drugs, in a very low place. I'd been brought up well by my very busy parents and felt constantly I was letting myself down and them. Despite all that it appeared that I was going to continue on this road of destruction.
I remember distinctly passing by the forces career office on the high street one day and thought to go in and talk to them. I'd felt it wasnt for me, then after a series of quick, unfortunate events, where I'd almost really gotten myself into a no return situation, I decided to sign up.
I then spent 23 years serving honourably, saving perhaps thousands of lives as part of the medical service in the forces. Got myself properly educated to masters level, married a lovely girl and had 2 boys, living in my own home which is now mortgage free at 47.
As much as I didnt want to join the forces whatsoever, it was the single best thing I've ever done and has turned not just my life round, but many others.
I wholeheartedly agree that national service might provide the younger generations coming up with an "alternative" to nihilism and selfish behaviour. Particularly the poorer in society with little or no other way.

Karol i work in the NHS, and i must agree with many of your points. However we are overloaded with people from the 3rd world. They are often under qualified, sometimes i even wonder if they actually ARE qualified at all. My dept went from a majority british 15 years ago which operated with half the staff, with outdated diagnostics and yet we had a great morale and sense of teamwork.
Now its a dept with 4 white men out of 57! We have double the staff, better diagnostics, but the place is barely functional, riven with in fighting between various minority interests, no trust, no teamwork, as well as the issues we have with qualifications surrounding these "new to the parish". Managers heads are so far in the sand, they might aswell be in Australia.
When improvements are suggested i get an instant pushback from management, at one point being told what i said was a good idea but theyd have to change the SOPs!
The inspection agencies such as MHRA, CQC, HCPC are completely unfit for practice and are unable to point to the very obvious problems...instead layering on yet more paperwork, unsuitable and often over complicated "fixes" to problems which dont even touch the main issues.
Theres no saving this behemoth of stupidity and inflexibility.

Agreed, speaking as an "immigrant" I came to the UK from Ireland in the early 90s, joined the Navy and spent 23 years in it, I have 2 sons that I bring up to be proud of the country I've come to. I work now in the damnable NHS and can't believe what's being allowed to happen to the country.
My education in Ireland was very balanced about Britain, sure we learnt of the bad things, but we learnt of the inventions, and ingenuity also, the role in WW2 etc.
This is the best country in the world being slowly turned into Mogadishu by importing en masses the waifs and strays of the 3rd world with nothing to offer only their tribalism, poor work ethic, sickly genetic issues, and backward religions.
