I don't know about your theory that universities have two missions that are at odds. Because here in Germany, vocational training and the heady humanities are very clearly separated (there is no need for engineers to take humanities classes for example). But universities here still suffer from much of the same problems. So I would be skeptical towards this being the cause for the tilt of modern universities. More generally, I doubt that this problem can be fixed by "repairing" the institution. The fix is not something that can be done at there. I think this is to optimistic. Much rather it seems to be the case that modern universities aligning with a larger societal tilt away from valuing knowledge for knowledge's sake.

Yeah, Wittgenstein really is missing. Along with Derrida (and possibly Foucault). Whereas someone like Frege seemed not totally like the others in terms of importance

@koschmx I was using it more of a case than a point. But yeah, trying to fix the issue at university level is like calling a plumber when it rains through the roof.

Thats kinda what they are there for

Of course, you meant to say A Thousand Plateaus

@Lin-rs9pw I can see how he would forgo the big names of psychoanalysis on the same grounds as Peterson, though. But I am with you on Bataille if only to see his brain melt :D

That book hanging over the left side of the shelf gives me serious anxiety
3
So? Rand can still be influenced by Nietzsche even if your remark were true (it is probably more difficult than that)

I never found Gender Trouble to difficult to read. They lay out their whole argument in chapter four or five of the book. But I also see how you would feel like in a swamp if you are not familiar enough with the continental philosophers she relies on

I‘d think it would still be worth doing a masters. Mine really lead me to engage way more deeply with the topic (British Studies) and I found many new interests
2
Yeah. People shouting about how they read dozens of books within the year are super aus to me…
2
I recently did the math for how many more book I will read in my life: only 2550 ... really disheartening
2
I really like the new visuals of this video - especially how you visualized "variety"

@doclime4792 You do see the irony in that you are just some guy off the street that gives their view on Derrida and Foucault right now. Get a hold of yourself. I also visited an intro lecture on the history of philosophy. And I’ve spent enough time in an English department to know that he is not more important than Derrida. Being sooner does not equal being more important.

Thank you for the list but I'd rather spend a lifetime trying to figure out Anti-Oedipus

Ha that’s funny. I did philosophy and english in undergrad and chose to focus on English because of the philosophy of language. We also look kinda alike

I always admired the great readers like Derrida, Zizek. But in university being a great reader is not wanted.

Yes!

Arendt I guess never claimed the title of Existentialist because she was very adamant about not being a philosopher but a political theorist

American lay-off culture is a disgrace. All the best luck for your new career :)

I watched his dark materials as a kiddo and it broke me. (Also I dont know how to feel about your choice of packing Beowulf and Arthurian Myth onto the list)

Wait! Does the timeline in your video correspond to the timeline of the video player? What a nice touch!

@richtichwichtich what an uninformed comment

Watching this for inspiration knowing full well I have a tbr I won’t finish in a million years. Edit: Turns out I already read most of your list 😂 Also, I can’t stand Octavia Butler, she’s way to Reagany for my taste.
1
I can’t stand Octavia Butler’s Tale of the Sower. I think she is almost Reaganist in the way this book sees the world. I will give her a second chance by reading her Biogenesis books though

So, you are trying to write a science fiction novel ? 😂
1
I had exactly the same problem during my whole bachelor studies in English Literature- I started reading for fun a few months ago. But it kinda hurt my engagement with canonical literature and academic essays… You get some, you loose some, I guess 😂
1
"write drunk" yep sounds like Hemingway!

I read all of them this year - damn I am on a role 😂

I really grew fond of reading on the iPad and then swipe in my notes app in small format to write down a thought. I could never read kindle books exclusively because I need to see my boos to be reminded of reading them :D
