I'd say start the duel citizen process, I did 30 years ago, my dad was actually born and raised in Italy .... it's a long process which took about 2 years with lots of begging and hand wringing (because I wanted to live there and did for 25 yrs). The plus to this is also how it opens the doors to all of Europe, that means that you can buy a house or start a business anywhere in the EU within the parameters of the laws of that country and also have access to all the health care all over that continent, plus having that second passport would let you go places that an American passport wouldn't allow you to go. Just sayin'.... do it!
