  1. Peer review has been in decline over the last couple of decades. I know - I have been involved with both submitting manuscripts and reviewing papers. A lot of people tapped to conduct peer review either don't do it, or do a very slipshod and/or cursory job. Imagine getting a manuscript back from peer review with only a short paragraph describing a couple of changes to the manuscript. And that has been going on since at least the early 2000s. It is little wonder that a lot of very questionable stuff gets published.

If Sudoff was completely above board, he would have retained the original images or even the southern blots and sent Elizabeth Bik copies to demonstrate either his data is correct, or show that he himself is the victim of someone fudging his data. The fact he is being so defensive makes one wonder.
