@richardbowers3647 There were two issues. First, the Japanese had trained extensively for night fighting using torpedoes, whereas the Americans had trained for using its guns (mostly during daylight). So the Americans were basically bringing a pistol to a fight while the other side had rifles. Second, the Japanese had the best torpedo of the war, bar none. It had high speed, long range, a very large warhead, and was extremely reliable. It took ages for the Americans to fully realize just how good it was, mostly because of prejudice and arrogance (no non-European nation can build a modern weapon that good!).
