Actually, trench warfare dates back to the late Middle Ages/ Renaissance and the advent of gun powder and siege trains with cannons. It was used extensively in siege warfare, and is known as the sap and parallel system for attacking fortified towns.

13:00 I like how you talk about the "creeping barrage", first used by the Bulgarians in 1913, then re-invented on the Western Front in 1915-1916 and used extensively by the British. Also used in WW2 at El Alamein.

@OCTAVIANVS_AVGVSTVS_CAESAR Thanks for the reminder. I really have to pull out my copy of the Gallic Wars and reread it.

I remember seeing a couple of Youtube videos indicating that the Belarussian Army is essentially out of the war. Indications are that the bulk of the high ranking officers resigned, and many of the troops either deserted, quit or just went home. If true, the most that Belarus could field right now is a brigade, and I doubt the Lukashenko will want to deprive himself of this force in case the opposition foments an uprising.

I suspect that the troops from the area of Kyiv are going to have poor morale, and have lost much of their armor. I don't know if they will want to fight. Also, as you said, Russian logistics are going to experience more strain. Considering their losses to date, we may see more columns of stuck trucks and tanks. I also heard that the Ukrainians have retaken some villages about halfway between Zaporizhzhia and Melitopol, and may have taken Donetsk. If true, the Russians are starting to suffer some other setbacks, including losing a major transportation and supply hub. It might also open the road to Mariupol. and cut the Russians in two again.
