For me, the issue isn't the support of the public, but the lack of support from the generals and politicians. To me that is one of the outstanding things about this attempted coup - Prigozhin got no support from those in power. Also, while he may have support from the people, I notice they didn't take up arms to fight along side Wagner, they just stood on the sidelines and cheered.
