  2. I would say it was probably more guilt by association. After all, it is much easier for most people who are not academics to tar everyone with the same brush than to make relatively fine distinctions between political groups. In other words, it is easier to say that "if it walks and talks like a duck, therefore it is a duck" than separate the geese and other waterfowl from the definition of "duck". Or to use another example, many primitive cultures called everything that flew "birds", a catch-all phrase that included bats and flying insects. For similar reasons, it is likely this is why many insect names in English end with the word -fly (housefly, dragonfly, butterfly, etc).
