The Ukrainian Army is still largely an infantry heavy force, so they don't have the mobility the Russian forces have. On the flip side, they can infiltrate through wooded areas and capture terrain better than the Russian forces. So they can lever the Russians out of places by cutting their supply lines, but don't quite have enough mobile forces to close off all the escape routes. However, this does work in their favor, because they can force the Russians to retreat, then shell the "you know what" out of them as they retreat up the roads. They have been doing this fairly effectively, especially at Lyman. Also, Ukraine hasn't been saying much about captured Russian prisoners, although we have seen them in the past. We do see small units, but not huge numbers. Perhaps they are concealing the number so they can keep the POW camps secret from the Russians, who would probably not hesitate to kill their own people if they can.
