There are a number of places like Vorkuta in Canada and Alaska. Remote communities based on single industries, or remote First Nations communities. Trying to maintain many of these communities can be extremely difficult. Indeed, several of these communities can only be reached during winter over ice roads, or by air.

And they had a vibrant culture and were developing technology, albeit at a slower pace then the Europeans for reasons out of their control (read "Guns, Germs and Steel" for the reasons). All the Europeans and others who came later are interlopers. That is a fact.

To a certain extent the Jones Act does make sense. It was probably meant to prevent the US domestic water-borne traffic being held hostage to external fleets (just think how Russia tried to strangle the EU by cutting oil and gas sales). However, the unintentional result has been to cripple water-borne internal trade. I would say that the act may need to be modified, but not necessarily repealed.

@dixonpinfold2582 And how is saying that the First Nations or Aboriginal peoples the original occupants of North America, or the ancestors of the Inca, Maya and Aztecs the original occupants of Central and South America bigoted and illiberal? It's the truth. They were here first, something like 13,000 years before the first Europeans arrived. As I said, history. Backed up by archeological evidence. Science.

What's really stupid about the current war is that Putin is killing off or chasing out of the country the generations that will be paying into the retirement fund. Not only that, the ones leaving the country tends to be the ones who are the largest wage earners. Putin is quite literally cutting his own throat.
