  1. The Chinese contact with the Rome/Greeks and India was via Kushans, Afghanistan, Central Asia. Buddhism spread from Greek Gandhara, not from Bodh Gaya. Most people get it wrong based on modern reality.

  2. The man is a scholar in the scientific mold. Science tests ideas against reality, while here he is sorting through to the source materials. Religion is not principally concerned about truth, it is concerned about cult and there are many cults originating from a common source. If you use Jesus as an example there are plenty of different groups that do not agree with one another and call themselves Orthodox and the other as heretic.

  3.  @D__Ujjwal  Gandhara was part of Demetrius I Kingdom 180 BC or it's successors Indo-Greek Kingdom. It expanded once the Mauryas collapsed. Menander is the Greek king around which Milinda Panha is composed. Yes, the population was Indian and spoke Gandhari prakrit.

  4. Wonderful exposition, though I miss the historical aspect (itinerary). When I first read the book, it seemed boring with difficult terrain and bandits, the context just wasn't there. As I learned history, geography and the spread of Buddhism from Gandhara, I began to appreciate the worth of the work.
