I live in a Canadian city somewhat like London Ontario (just a bit bigger in size), and I've never owned a car. I've lived in the same house my whole life, and over the years it's gotten harder and harder to get by without driving. There's a clear trend where the city has becomes more and more car friendly and less walkable, and the pandemic has only made this worse. And this isn't because of zoning laws or regulations, it's because commercial businesses have been steadily moving out of the core and as far away from each other as they can get. When I was a kid there were two movie theaters, two grocery stores and at least a dozen restaurants within walking distance. Now there's maybe three or four marginal restaurants and that's it. To get groceries or do any shopping I have to take the bus, and the movie theaters are nearly all gone, fled to the remote edges of the city.
