@caryd67 It's probably not that the crows thought the cat was harmless (a cat is a cat to them), but they knew it was your cat. They understood the relationship between the cat and you, and knew that you wanted it back.

This is an excellent video on a really interesting subject! Thank you for making it.

@Warhawk76 It will be extremely difficult, so it'll probably take time to identify the constituents of FBS and understand how they work. I think it can be done eventually, but the question is how long the funding will hold out. Will corporations keep funding research that may not pay off for a decade or longer?

I think the chimpanzees are aware of the suffering their actions can cause others, but I'm not sure they feel empathy for everyone the way humans (Ideally!) do. For the chimp empathy is a scarce resource, used mainly on the individuals they're closest to. In other words, for them empathy is relational. They'll feel deep empathy for their closest family members and friends, and somewhat less but still substantial empathy for the other members of their troop. And that's about it. As the Jane Goodall anecdote shows, it's possible for them to stop feeling any empathy at all for "traitor" chimps that are no longer considered part of the group. Humans have the freedom to construct general moral principles from emotions like empathy, but chimps just can't. Their lives are too hard to feel sympathy for potential competitors.

Thank you for a really interesting video! I never realized that hibernation could be done in warm climates.

It's all about that gang life. ;-) My city is a neverending battleground between magpies and crows, and over the years I've learned that corvids do have a social structure. The crows on my block are always listening for the calls of other crows (they're really good at ignoring human noises), and if they hear an alarm call or a "come here now" call or whatever, they're off to provide backup for the caller. (Magpies do this too.) It might look like they're mostly alone, but in truth there's a wide crow family that extends for blocks in every direction, as far as they can hear. When hundreds of crows swarm together, it's sort of a cross between an extended family reunion and a test of their emergency alert system.

@erinm9445 Sounds like getting rid of the fetal bovine serum is a great way to cut costs. Good to hear that someone has already succeeded.
