  1. It seems like a matter of degree to me. For example, I have home insurance even though I don't expect my house to burn down. In the same vein I think things like the Svalbard Seed Vault and the massive seed collection at Kew Gardens in London are good ideas, and not a waste of money. Extending that idea a bit I think a Mars colony would be a very good thing, although it will take generations of hard and dangerous work to make one that could be self-sustaining. It's a bet worth making, even if not a sure thing. But extending this idea to the point where one doesn't care about people suffering and dying right now in the present day, or not paying attention to immediate real problems like the climate crisis because it won't wipe out our entire species, is carrying things too far. That's fixing your eyes so firmly on the horizon you can't see the rocks and cracks under your feet. You're headed for a fall.
