It's honestly no different than IT. This is also the preservation of information, it's just that the information is DNA.

I think it's a great idea. And while the Moon is sort of an ideal storage area, we should be making archives of animals and plants here on Earth first. For example, Kew Gardens in England is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because they have seeds from nearly every known plant on Earth. There are species that would have already gone extinct if they hadn't been "backed up" at Kew and then brought back to life by careful scientists there who patiently experiment with things like moisture and nutrient levels. We need an animal version of Kew Gardens somewhere on Earth, even if it depends on electricity to keep the samples cold. The problem we need to plan for isn't a total apocalypse, but rather the gradual extinction of organisms and the loss of their biodiversity. If animals go extinct there should be an archive somewhere where we can clone a sample and bring them back.
