I'm in favor of NASA and DARPA's nuclear thermal prototype. Research in this area has been blocked for years, even though it could revolutionize spaceflight. The biggest problem with space travel is exposure to radiation, so any technology that can radically reduce travel times will also reduce the amount of radiation astronauts are exposed to during the trip. There's always a small chance rockets will blow up before they get to space, but we still put people in them. I think fears of an accident during launch are are mostly exaggerated. And after launch the chance that the prototype will collide with space junk is small, so long as the researchers do their experiment far enough away from the Earth. They're not going to park it in low Earth orbit.
