You're right in what you say, but I think you're giving too much credit to many of the people who deny things like climate change. They're not just being dumb, they actually are anti-science. There are a lot of people who live in a bubble where they only associate with others who have the same beliefs, and more and more they've come to reject the idea that there is an objective reality. They also reject anything that doesn't agree with their beliefs, including science. The idea that millions of people can live disconnected from reality is pretty stunning. Reality will of course catch up with them, but until that happens they're an enormous drag force on any attempts to create large scale change.
