In the NYT Paul Krugman was saying that Trump and most Republicans are reactionaries. Trump doesn't know anything about the Confederacy or care about the Civil War, but he instinctively gets angry whenever minorities appear to score a "win." You can also hear it in the way Tucker Carlson talks: "No matter what they do to you." Like life is a contest between "us" and "them," and any victory for "them" is a loss for "us." The reactionary's world can never include everyone, there always has to be an other to be kept down, so the in-group can know they're on top.
