  1. It's like the line from that poem by Yeats: "The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity." Old Senator Johnson there says he's going to "resist" the Democrats just because they're Democrats, and every Republican is right there behind him. Meanwhile the Democrats are negotiating with themselves to reach a compromise that no one likes. I don't know what can be done about Democrats like Manchin, but something needs to be done to bring him into line. In normal circumstances Manchin's dissension would be a welcome part of the Democratic process, but these aren't normal circumstances. The Democrats have two years to fix the current mess and make a case to Americans that they should be allowed to govern even longer. That's it, two years. And if they fail they could be shut out of power for another decade.
