  1. The stock market isn't the economy but it does represent more than just the interests of the elite. These days most people depend upon investments for their retirement. Recessions are only temporary, so having one now wouldn't be that bad for most people who are invested in the market, they can just wait it out. But a recession-induced drop in stock prices would absolutely hurt anyone who's retiring in 2019 or maybe 2020.
