  1. Manchin is trying to make a political calculation that benefits himself. So far he's done quite well as a Democrat in an increasingly Republican state, but what he doesn't realize is that being a senator is different from being a governor. As governor he could directly appeal to the people across party lines, but as a senator he is now very much a part of the Democratic machine. If he fails to do his part that machine will fail. This is a moment in history when people want decisive action, not platitudes about business as usual. And if Biden and the 117th Congress fail to take decisive action that helps ordinary Americans the West Virginians who voted for Manchin will hold him personally accountable. There's no one else to blame and nowhere to hide when you're the crucial vote in the Senate.
