  1. This sucks, and I feel bad for them. ISRO put so many years and so much effort into the mission, only to have the last part of it fail. But like Scott says in the video, they still have the orbiter, which has most of the experiments and it's probably where most of the money went. So the mission hasn't failed, it's just partially successful.

  4. @Ivan Ilyich, the difference is that Elon Musk actually can build rockets, and he's shown he has the wherewithal to continue his plans despite initial failures. Musk doesn't have the money to colonize Mars. No one does. But the hope is he'll get so close and his plans will be so realistic that other stakeholders like governments and shareholders will agree to fund the remainder.

  13. I really like your explanation of how the scientists got the image. It makes the process more understandable. And from the sound of it, this is just the start of what they can do with the Event Horizon Telescope. Since it's a network they can add more telescopes to it or upgrade existing ones (or upgrade the data processing) and get even better images in the future. This seems like a pretty big deal for astronomy.

In this case the researchers have attempted to calculate how much phosphine could be generated by known non-living processes, and have concluded the amount they've observed is too large to be accounted for in that way. With a planet outside our Solar System, looking for these biosignatures would be more complicated because nothing could be directly observed except the spectra. But like Scott Manley says in the video, oxygen and methane together is a good bet, since they normally combine to form carbon dioxide.

Phobos and Deimos are the big, attention getting new additions, but it's the drone barges, support ships and fairing recovery ships (along with the tugs) that make reusability more than just a word. It was really interesting to learn about them here. And what the heck is an Octagrabber? They grab onto the booster and secure it for transport? Very cool!

  37. Thank you for another great video! My quick, totally uniformed takes: - The Blue Origin entry looks the most like the Lunar landers of the past, even if it's made with totally new technology. Convergent evolution can be a good thing, but it does limit what can be done with the lander. - The Dynetics entry is a fascinating dark horse. It's fundamentally new and has unknown potential. - The SpaceX entry is absurdly huge, looks like it came straight off the cover of a 1950's sci-fi magazine, and I love it already. Landing an apartment building sized rocket on the Moon seems like ridiculous overkill - and maybe it is too much for some missions, but man oh man, you could really accomplish something with all that cargo space!

  38. I wish them well, but there's a long history of space enthusiasts with big ideas going nowhere. Sometimes they're very smart people with really good ideas, but the lack of money is just too big a hurdle. The unfortunate truth is that progress in this field is made by organizations that already have a source of funding. It's a game for governments and very rich men. Hopefully development in space will progress to the point where there's enough infrastructure up there to give smaller groups a starting point, and they can build upon earlier successes without starting from zero. But we're sure not there yet.

On another note, what you said about the heat of the rotors being the chopper's main limiting factor is really interesting. That might end up being the main limiting factor of any kind of high performance machinery on Mars. We never really think about the role Earth's atmosphere plays in dispelling heat because it's ubiquitous, but on Mars evaporative cooling won't work so well and we'll have to design around it.

  75. Wow, thank you for the video, Scott Manley. This might be coolest thing I've ever heard. A crazy, continuous nuclear reaction rocket that can produce thrusts somewhere between 60-70 km/s and one percent of the speed of light! "Which is probably a good thing, because you don't want a nuclear reaction running up inside your engine plumbing.." I'm not an engineer, but this sounds like good advice. You'd probably want to make sure the exhaust is never pointed at the Earth as well.

  76. The Orion Drive is far and away the idea most familiar to viewers of this channel, and it still has the allure of something that might someday, somehow be possible. But building that pusher plate and all those bombs would be quite a challenge. The craziest idea on the list (imo) is generating nuclear power using pulsed nuclear bombs. At least with the Orion Drive you're accelerating away from the explosions and hopefully don't have to deal with their full effects. But Project Pacer would just sit there on top of all the nuclear fire and hope the radiation and seismic effects didn't eventually destroy the facility. Btw, I love the diagram at 8:44 with the optimistically named "Safety" component that would protect the surface from any nuclear byproducts coming back up the hole. As for terraforming Mars, I think redirecting comets so they smack into the planet is the best way to go. But you'd need to do it in a way that allowed a significant portion of the volatiles to stay on the planet instead of erupting back into space again. It would come down to precisely controlling the angle of impact and maybe the orbital velocities of the comets. Definitely not something we can do today, but it may be achievable in the more distant future.

If the programmer(s) had possessed a greater understanding of what each part of the program did, they may have wondered at the lack of filtering and sent a question to someone higher up that could have exposed the flaw. But their job involved such a tremendous amount of detail they probably didn't have any time or energy left over to do more than transcribe instructions. This is a good example of how automation can actually increase human intelligence, since software can now take over all that tedious compiling.

  88. Thanks for a truly fascinating video! This is a subject I've heard almost nothing about, and it's really interesting. Thank you for explaining it so well, and for finding those relevant video clips! It must have been quite a job to track them down. So the Coriolis forces are more noticeable with higher rotations, and larger rotating bodies could spin more slowly to simulate the same gravity. They should have put that centrifuge on the ISS! We could have had years of data on centrifugal effects without the interference of Earth's gravity by now. Anyway, it seems that bigger is better when you're trying to simulate gravity with rotation. For something smaller like a spaceship on a long duration trip, it might not be worth it to put in a centrifuge, because the crew would have to train to relearn things as simple as picking up a coffee cup, and there'd be additional strains on the ship itself. Imagine using a big water tank wrapped around the living area as a radiation shield and then spinning the ship! That tank would be constantly sloshing around, creating different pressures on stuff like pipes and seals.

  97. I'm totally with you on that imagined future! Hopefully it will come to pass, and sooner than we may think. As for all these proposed satellite networks, the biggest thing that stands out for me is that none of them are intended to be permanent. For instance, Starlink satellites will apparently be de-orbited and left to burn up after five to seven years, and hopefully all the other proposed networks will have similar limited lifetimes. If the development of these networks follows the development of similar systems on Earth, there will probably be an initial proliferation followed by a gradual and steady winnowing out process, until we're eventually left with one or maybe two competitors that have the market carved up between them. This will still lead to thousands of little satellites orbiting up there, but it will eventually be far less than the complete free-for-all that seems to developing now. It'll make astronomy more difficult, but after an initial burst of almost ridiculous proliferation, the number of satellites will settle down into a more steady and limited number dictated by economics. So the difficulty won't keep increasing without limit. And when there's only one or two big providers it may be easier to negotiate things like the "science loss" tax you mentioned with them.

When we don't have to take the sun into consideration the only remaining factor we need to keep in mind when designing a calendar is the human body's circadian rhythm - so we'd still need to use "days" of around 24 hours length. But that's just approximately 24 hours. People who live underground with no natural light sometimes shift to a 25 hour "day," so that may be more optimal.

  125. The differences between the two companies come down to the differences between the founders. Elon Musk wants to revolutionize everything and get to Mars within his own lifetime. Jeff Bezos wants to build a strong company that will eventually revolutionize everything, but he doesn't need to be there to see it. For Bezos building Blue Origin is itself the achievement. He doesn't make decisions about rocket engines, he hires people who he can trust to do that well. Bezos is more interested in making Blue Origin a part of the industry, working with other companies, instead of upending his competitors.

If it really is a choice between this and mothballing the Roc then I guess this is better, but are there any peaceful uses for hypersonic technology? Frankly, the last thing we need to build (as a species) is hypersonic weapons. The combination of hypersonic weapons and AI suggests a new kind of incredibly dangerous high speed warfare that would largely be out of human control - and thus a lot more likely to happen. But then again, in the absence of some kind of treaty or agreement banning hypersonic weapons, every country with a significant military is is going to explore this technology, and the US will probably build their own test vehicles if they haven't started doing so already. Renting space from Stratolaunch Systems might be a cheaper and faster way to do that research. But I wish we could just collectively leave this particular branch of the technology tree unexplored.

  156. Neal Stephenson has a spacecraft like this in his novel Seveneves. In the book there are lots of little spacecraft called "arklets." When two of them are joined by a tether and spun around their center of mass they form a "bolo" with simulated gravity. Tethers and spinning are a very interesting idea that could have wide application in the real world.

  157. Maybe they should keep three of the most historic engines and install them in a space shuttle that goes in a museum somewhere. It's good to keep something like that for the historical record. But on the whole I'm okay with this. Rockets are meant to fly, and while it's always good to keep examples of the most historic and important machines I think the best use for most of them is to keep going until they can't fly any more, then they can go out with a Viking funeral as they burn up in the atmosphere. If being used up on the SLS is the only way these engines can continue to fly, then that's the way they should be used.

My understanding is that Artemis had the goal of landing on the Moon by 2024 specifically because Trump wanted that to be an accomplishment of his second term. So far as I know Biden doesn't have the same kind of goals, so his Administration will probably take a more technocratic, less personally motivated approach to NASA. The result of this will be much less pressure to get Artemis done quickly. Combine that with the Congressional budget shenanigans you detailed in your video, and we get a recipe for slow progress that's more like previous Administrations. Hopefully they'll keep a hard deadline like 2026, but without a political motive in the background driving everything forward I suspect Artemis will get slower and slower and that deadline will move further and further into the future.

It might be impossible to wipe enough of it off to let you see again, then there's the possibility that it might clog your radiator and get inside the joints. And maybe there's one or two chunks of ice coming down that 500 meter cliff...

Plumbing issues in the booster like fuel slosh and the fluid hammer effect, maybe an oxygen leak in Starship... The common theme here is the rocket just couldn't withstand the physical stresses of flight. It survived liftoff and stage separation, but not much longer than that. The next one needs both stages to be tougher and more resilient, if that's physically possible.

It sounds like he's saying they originally planned to use LIDAR, but when they saw what the surface of Bennu was like they had to design the new optical navigation system from scratch. That's impressive!

Still though, he's right about the "two gates" and the idea that giant colonies in orbit will be of more use to planet Earth than a colony on Mars. Or at least they could be more useful if there's a truly gigantic construction infrastructure in place to build and support them. The funny thing is that Bezos's vision would have a greater impact on ordinary people, but it might be generations before we can build it. Meanwhile, Musk's vision of a Mars colony might not make much difference to the price of beans here on Earth, but it does seem much more achievable today, or at least within our lifetimes.

  227. VERY cool! They're all really interesting. My favorite is probably "Making Soil for Space Habitats by Seeding Asteroids with Fungi." Because, c'mon, wrapping asteroids in plastic bags and seeding them with fungi to see what happens, that's about as cool as it gets. Following close behind is "Kilometer-Scale Space Structures from a Single Launch," or super origami, because I love the ambition. You'd probably need some extra launches to put in things like machinery and air, though. This might work together with inflatables to produce structures with interior complexity. Other favorites are the ones that would make awesome space missions that are probably achievable, because they sound like realistic extensions of current technology. "Extrasolar Object Interceptor and Sample Return Enabled by Compact, Ultra Power Dense Radioisotope Batteries," "FarView - An In Situ Manufactured Lunar Far Side Radio Observatory," and "A Titan Sample Return Using In-Situ Propellants" would make great expansions for Kerbal Space Program. They're all great, though. Ideas like using solar power collectors to beam energy to Lunar Rovers or putting little submarines inside a big robot submarine are genius.

In real microgravity the cookie asteroids would be slowly moving around the space within the oven thanks to those convection currents. (And the impossibility of placing a cookie in one place and leaving it totally still.) Some would bounce off the walls, leaving a thin layer of dough behind, while others would slowly collide and bounce off each other, making a sort of cookie asteroid field within the oven cavity. I predict that you'd get an unevenly burned mess. If you left the oven on long enough to completely cook the larger lumps it would burn the residue on the oven walls along with any smaller pieces floating around. If you cooked just long enough to get the smaller pieces the big lumps would still be doughy and raw. Consistency would be a fascinating challenge to achieve.

Or you could land a Starship remotely and have a ready made moon base waiting for the astronauts who arrive on the second flight. If you replace the SLS with Starship there are so many possible configurations for Artemis that involve fewer launches and less money than the current plan. But it all hinges on the concept of orbital refueling. SpaceX absolutely has to get that nailed down to make everything else possible.

  280. Thanks for another great video! This was a really interesting and useful look back at how we got here. If there's lesson to be learned, it seems to be: the cheaper your manufacturing process, the more launches you'll get to make. More launches means more failures, but it also means more opportunities to hunt down and fix mistakes so they won't happen again. The bigger, more expensive programs either didn't get off the ground, or in the case of Boeing, did launch but with unsatisfactory results. Meanwhile SpaceX has been building (and sometimes losing) cheaper rockets at a much faster rate, and making more progress than everybody else.

  284. Thanks for another great video! You've summed this development up really well, and I can't think of anything to add except amplifying what you've said. This new development doesn't appear to be a good thing. The race to get to the Moon by 2024 seems like it could be a repeat of the Apollo program, with little left to show for it afterward. LOP-G isn't the best idea, but at least it's semi-permanent architecture that will help make future missions easier, and become a platform for scientific research. I hope that NASA ultimately goes back to their original conception of using LOP G for a Lunar landing in 2028, but I guess that's up to the politicians.

To think that something so powerful could go so far and then come back safely and on schedule, all on its own, that never stops being cool.   292. NASA's Artemis plan is very exciting! But, well, I've been excited by Artemis plans before that never happened, so it's difficult to believe they'll get everything done on schedule. Hopefully they will! But when real life meets human plans, real life always wins and things get delayed and changed. If they keep getting the funding they'll make it back to the Moon, but probably not as soon as 2024. The real question is if Congress will keep funding Artemis when the goals start to stretch out forwards in time.

  293. Thank you for making this amazing video! It's the most fascinating thing I've seen all day, by far. So the rate beacon failed, which meant the guidance computer was only getting information on the rocket's rate of acceleration from the ground based rate radars, which meant it couldn't properly calculate the Doppler shift, and from that the velocity. The ground radar would return a range of values, some of them noisy (close to but not quite the "sweet" value) and some of them measuring the rocket's vibration along with the linear acceleration. Because someone made a typo (missing the overbar) when giving the equations to the programmers, the guidance computer used all of these acceleration measurements instead of using only an averaged "smooth" value. This made the computer think the rocket was going crazy, so it ordered a number of severe course corrections which actually made rocket lose control and have to be destroyed. Is that about it?

Er, my very rough understanding of this is they were looking for dark matter, but their detector had so much Xenon in it that some of it just happened to be Xenon-124, and it just happened to decay while they were watching. Still an unbelievably unlikely event, but made more possible by the fact that they had tons of Xenon hooked up to sensitive detectors.

It seems like their space program is both measured and realistic, and I fully believe they can achieve their goals. The American goal of returning to the Moon in four years is wildly ambitious, but I hope they can succeed or at least land humans on the Moon sometime in the 2020s. Maybe there could already be a permanent base by the time the Chinese get there.

If it's going to land anywhere other than a specially prepared pad, they need to make it tough enough to handle debris that's blown up and under the skirting. I hope SpaceX has figured out how to address this problem. The Crew-1 launch was great! Hopefully it's the start of many, many missions with Crew Dragon and they run that number up higher and higher.

Yes, but a lot of companies (probably most of them) would prefer to continue developing an existing system to make it more cost effective, instead of going all-in on a completely new launch system when the old one is just beginning to turn a profit. Most companies would probably try to make that second stage reusable and make the Falcon 9 cheaper to operate, so they could continue operating it for many years to come. It's extremely unusual for SpaceX to put so much development time and money into into the new, unproven, still very experimental Starship they way they have.

  337. I liked the movie. A lot of people seized on the Max Q thing to say the entire film was unrealistic, but I think they did an incredible job of making it feel real. And that made the drama so much more effective. There was no Star Trek style techno solution at the end, it was a story about nobility and sacrifice. So thank you for everything you did to help them increase the realism, Scott Manley. It really worked on screen. That said, I do find the central concept of the stowaway himself to be a bit out there. How did he end up sealed inside a panel? This was an area where the story could have benefited from a little more explanation, because I was never sure if he was an innocent victim of circumstance, or some kind of cunning saboteur.

  338. As a non-American I've gotta say that Prompt Global Strike thing is chilling. If it becomes possible to deliver non-nuclear bombs by ICBM you know the generals and Presidents are going to start doing more drone strikes from other continents, just like they do drone strikes from local bases now and control them from home. If the capability exists the need for it will be retroactively discovered. I really don't want to live in a world where the USAF (or certain other nations once they figure this out too) can drop a bomb on every single square foot of the Earth within an hour. As for the actual subject of this video... It does seem pretty far fetched. Outside of science fiction novels there's seldom a need to get a a single VIP from one point on the globe to another widely separated point within hours. And if you're transporting cargo... Well, what kind of cargo absolutely has to be delivered immediately but is still redundant enough to risk in a rocket launch? And if you're carrying troops, the rocket gives you no element of surprise whatsoever. Everyone in the area will know you arrived and have plenty of time to shoot at your rocket-ship that's probably still filled with explosive fuel.

It's a nice callback to the channel's roots and a good way to show some visuals on a spacecraft we know almost nothing about. Boy, LOP-G really is going to be all alone in the night, our little beachhead of oxygen and water way out there in the middle of nothing. It might be bypassed on NASA's return to the Moon (if they actually get that working with their crazy short deadline) but it sounds like it will become more and more important for lots of different missions as time goes on. And it also sounds like they're going to use the Dragon XL for temporary space to put stuff in before it reaches the end of its lifetime and they fill it with garbage for one final trip.
