  1. @Ivan Ilyich, the difference is that Elon Musk actually can build rockets, and he's shown he has the wherewithal to continue his plans despite initial failures. Musk doesn't have the money to colonize Mars. No one does. But the hope is he'll get so close and his plans will be so realistic that other stakeholders like governments and shareholders will agree to fund the remainder.

  2. I wish them well, but there's a long history of space enthusiasts with big ideas going nowhere. Sometimes they're very smart people with really good ideas, but the lack of money is just too big a hurdle. The unfortunate truth is that progress in this field is made by organizations that already have a source of funding. It's a game for governments and very rich men. Hopefully development in space will progress to the point where there's enough infrastructure up there to give smaller groups a starting point, and they can build upon earlier successes without starting from zero. But we're sure not there yet.

  4. So they'd give the drones a program to follow, then wait 84 minutes and hope they did it without any errors? It could work, but they'd have to plan everything out to the last detail beforehand.

  5. I was just going by what Jacek Siuda said about the amount of time the robots would be in contact with a ground station. If they could build or use a network of satellites then maybe that would make everything more realistic. Seems like that would add to the logistical difficulty and cost of everything, but maybe NASA or somebody could help them out.
