There was a period where Ford said they had a new synthetic gear oil that provided protection under difficult circumstances, but was a 75W-90. They called it 75W-90QFEHP. It turned out that in the real world, ooh, it wasn't working out, and they changed their recommendation for those vehicles to be changed to 75W-140 oil. I work on a 2003 Ford van with 8.8" rear axle that was from this era.

75W-140 is not an energy-saving move, .as it is thicker when it heats up.

FTM, do you ever change just the seal on a pump like this? Does... anybody?

Question for you, FTM: The car: 2003 E-150 Econoline , RWD One long driveshaft, going into a 4R70W. No external slip joint. Do not use the Teflon grease on these splines, right? Don’t want that stuff inside the transmission? Thanks in advance.

Questions for you, FTM: 1. If you find the front pinion bearing and/or race don’t look good, can you change them without pulling the pinion shaft out from behind? Specifically, the bearing race. 2. Did you use a new crush sleeve on this seal replacement job? Thanks in advance.
