On the contrary, China's latent economic potential was seen as early as the end of the cultural revolution, hence Nixon's opening in order to capitalise on the Sino-Soviet split... what a lot of people got wrong was that economic prosperity would lead to a change in government; well, China learned lessons from other countries and allowed private enterprise to flourish as long as it kept out of politics, and guess what, most people don't care about politics as long as they see improvements in their living standards, this is true in the West, too. We can saturate the airwaves with election propaganda from all sides, and barely half the electorate can be bothered to go to vote in a general election.

Life is pretty good. Do you spark a direct confrontation between 2 nuclear superpowers, billions of deaths, BILLIONS, for a country most of your electorate would struggle to find on a globe? Really?
