@ludwigvan3649 It's not that unusual for there to be a cultural difference but a linguistic similarity. Cree, Ojibwa, Miqmaw, and Innu all Speak Algonkian, but are not synonymous with the Algonquin tribe.
The narrator is correct here, that I think they used Maya to create an overall impression of authenticity, but given that Maya is still taught in schools in Mexico, it was probably just an easier indigenous language to learn, or perhaps the actors already knew it.
More irksome to me was the realisation that Gibson had lifted a lot of the ritualistic elements from Juan Mora Catlett's "Return to Aztlan" which was an Aztec movie. Apocolypto had struck me as rather Aztec seeming when I saw it as well.
It's true that the characters are speaking Maya, and even one captured lady prays to Mayan Moon Goddess Ixchele to pretect her children, but I think the creators were assuming that the audience would not realise or care that it was Maya they were speaking.
It was my impression though, that even in the context of the film narrative, this captured tribe was intended to be distinct though.

I'm only one voice here, but I would LOVE for Sam to interview her. I understand his reservations, but I think the audience would learn a lot from the intersectionality of ideas, where Marianne and Seder agree on so many points. Both might surprise each other. I think Sam is more loving than he even realises himself, and Marianne is more practical, in that nuts and bolts, economic systems sort of way, that is often the main theme of the Majority Report, than her brand usually portrays . I've heard the coalition argument coming up repeatedly. I wonder what that would look like for those of us who watch the media. Would we necessarily know, what coalitions had been formed? Also, when does a coalition become something more sinister, like a super PAC?

Thank you for this important conversation. In 2019 Marianne asked her supporters to donate to Mike Gravel, she did an online convivial conversation with competitor Andrew Yang, and they became friends and read each other's books. She gave over twenty honourable mentions to Tulsi Gabbard, and was the only candidate, apart from Deblasio, to endorse Bernie Sanders. In 2016, she harnessed the power of Sister Giant to help to launch Bernie's campaign. She co-founded the Peace Alliance, and recently received an award from the P.E.A.C.E. department along with Dr. Cornel West. In the eighties she founded Project Angel food to feed homebound AIDS patients, and often took care of them with her own hands, changing diapers, and feeding them while they threw up on her. Remember this was a time, when people didn't know how the virus was transmitted.
For the past four years, she has been sharing her platform with down ballot candidates, state by state. Those interviews are a civics lesson unto themselves.
She is an incredible public speaker, often inspiring crowds to surge to their feet, and roar.

It's not only the fact that she can quote the Bible, the Talmud, the Dalai Lama, Martin Luther king, and Nelson Mandela, and tie it all together, and apply it to public policy. It's not only the fact that she knows the history of America at a federal level, she also knows the history state by state, it's that there are no cue cards or prompters! This is all in her head! She remembers it, and can rattle it all off at a moment's notice, because she lives and breathes it. She understands what connects to what, and why it's relevant.

Some answers to questions I've heard from detractors. Political experience. Yeah it's great if you think everything has been going fine. If you want change, you might want someone with more of an outsider vision. There are other kinds of political experience than sitting in the legislative branch. Marianne has had years of experience as an advocate for progressive policies. I put to you, that the House and the Senate do not actually prepare a candidate for the executive role. I think the kinds of philanthropic work Marianne has been involved in do better.
Ukraine. Marianne wants a peace department. Last cycle she changed her mind about Venezuela. She is not a hard line non interventionist, because she's the kind of person who cares about the whole world. Marianne is well aware that foreign aid can be subverted.
"She has no chance against Biden". Why on earth not? I followed her entire run last cycle, and saw right wingers crushing on her because they liked her energy. Joe Biden likes her! When she brought up foreign policy in the first debate, he wanted to tell her his Nicaragua story. Also don't underestimate the power of a woman candidate as strong, and also seemingly sensitive as Marianne, against the Repubs. Hillary had terrible policies, but do you think it was comfortable for feminists to see her lose to a misogynists? Now imagine the love champion, (who is in reality tough as nails) in that role. She got standing ovations in New Hampshire and Iowa last round, where Warren had to buy thundersticks for her audience. I think it was Maher who remarked on how the audience surged to their feet when Marianne walked onto his show.
Reparations. An immensely important policy, which has been filibustered every time Marianne tries to mention it in front of a large audience. Remember Kamala's stunt last cycle? That makes me mad in itself.
I did not mean to write an article, but I'm that motivated. I wasn't even going to get out of bed this cycle, but when Kyle blew the horn for Marianne it wasn't even a choice.

The thing is, the third party movement behind Dr. West was looking at the green party as just that, a third party. They would have taken anything with ballot access, that didn't actively thwart the vote, but what irked me slightly, was that there was no considering of the principles on which the Green Party was founded. Dr. West strikes me as a labour activist who is for the working masses, not specifically, or particularly a GREEN activist, although I'm sure he's not against it. I can see that Williamson represents the dems as they were meant to be, and Stein is fully green in her soul. If the People's party had been more viable, and less problematic, it would have been perfect for Dr. West.

For what it's worth, I'm in all the MW FB groups, and I've never heard of Elwood. I'm not sure what he was doing for the campaign, particularly as a "National Ballot Access Field Organizer" sounds like a redundant position, if not, Ha Ha, totally mythical. You need state ballot access in the primary, and Cardona is on that. In the general, which I'm assuming is what "National ballot access" is all about, you would already have ballot access wherever the party has it, wouldn't you?

With all due respect to TYT, this is the first time I've heard Ana mention Marianne's name, which is troubling.
As the flagship of progressive media, they should not be relying on mainstream media and Rubin to inform them about candidates. I realise this is a crowded race, but they have the resources to research the candidates, and I fully expect them to have seen all the candidates' announcement speeches, particularly Marianne's which was very progressive..
I realise TYT conducted an interview with Marianne, but they should be covering the five grass roots candidates way more (Tulsi, Marianne, Bernie, Yang and Gravel).
Ana, I would like to know what it is about Warren that you regard as more progressive than Gabbard! I respect your perspective, that's why I want a breakdown.

@Sleeping_Insomiac Exactly. Death threats, and hate speech have foreseeable consequences. They are actually not even freedom of expression because they're simply an attempt to negate something. I think you run into trouble when you start trying to police symbolism. You think hair curlers and stained nighties promote laziness. I do not. Neither are promoting harm against others either way. I would support someone's right to wear a clown costume and religious items even. If you ask me, the line is where something is directly harmful. I don't consider seeing something a bit strange, as a child, to be harmful. Especially when an effort is made on the part of teachers and parents to explain to children that everyone dresses a bit different because people have different cultures and circumstances. I think it's our job to explain to children what is right in terms of getting along with each other amicably, but not too explain what is right and wrong in terms of personal choices. For society to evolve, children must also be given the space to form their own conclusions.
It terms of what is legislated and what rules are enforced, I think people in authority have no business dictating about style, religion, or aesthetic matters. But the have a responsibility to prevent harm.
There's always going to be debate about what that means, but I tend to think children who are exposed to more varieties of experiences at a young age, come out more informed, within reason of course.

@MusicfromMarrs I'm a volunteer. When I saw the Trump era, and the kids in cages, I went through the candidates on the democratic side, looking for someone who had both the magic, and the policies. I came upon Marianne, and for once both my gut, and my common sense were in agreement. I'd actually sworn I was going to sit this election cycle out, but when I saw that Marianne was on the move again, I couldn't hold back. That's just me though.
I actually agree that Marianne could do a bit more listening when talking to black people about reparations. However, I want it in the public sphere, and she is willing to bring it there. I have no doubt that her friend Nina Turner is not holding back, if she think Marianne's communication style needs work.

@UtubeMyAccountName To you last question, I think the media stirs up factions deliberately, but we also have that in us potentially, to blame others for our problems, and if we can blame immigrants, corporations, our leaders, or another nation, it lets us off the hook. I think the media, and our leaders, use that to their own advantage.
To your first question, well I AM actually Canadian, but given that the declaration of independence was signed, somewhat as a repudiation of aristocracy, one could say that the American way is about freedom, but of course 41 of the people signing the document were slave owners, so there's a bit of a contradiction there.

@claudelebel49 Actually, out of all the democratic candidates I think Marianne is the only one who has something in common with Trump. His one good quality, which is his ability to work a crowd. Where he appeals to the more selfish and fearful side of us, Marianne Speaks to our dreams and aspirations, but both use emotional signalling.
I think Tulsi is probably the most practical candidate, and Bernie is already legendary, but they're both trying to solve an emotional problem with reason. Bernie, Tulsi and Yang all have enough honour to run the country, but so far, I think Marianne is the only one with the charismatic fire to destroy Trump. Also she's a woman. I think a female opponent unsettles him more. Especially one like Marianne who will not necessarily argue in the customary manner.
Yang thinks Trump won because of economic despair. I love Yang, but I don't agree. I think he won because he's orange, he's entertaining, and he's audacious. He physically looks like a mascot for a fast food restaurant and says whatever's on his mind.
The American spirit IS audacious. It can take you to the moon, and it can put kids in cages. When Trump says "let's make America great again!" It speaks to the courageous, rebellious American spirit.
When Marianne says "We need to fall in love again." It also does. She knows how to grand strand.
We have lofty notions of how voters vote. "Vote on the issues, not the candidates" but do we? Billions of dollars are spent on advertising campaigns to brain wash us into buying certain products. It's not even important for them to make the most attractive looking commercial, simply the most memorable.
We fry our brains, daily with media, whenever we're not working, and with no downtime or reflection, expect to retain autonomy of thought.
Trump is an imbecile but he's smart in one respect. He knows the value of exposure, and he knows how business in the good old boy's club works.
Marianne, as she has said herself, knows how a sociopath works, and that might be just the thing.

@polyticks8453 It depends. If we're talking about a clear and present danger, and there's something we can do about it, then at that point, I say, do the thing you need to do. But if we're being truly fatalistic, and saying it's all messed up, and there's nothing anyone can do, then I think hopefulness is better, even to the point of delusion. The point of being realistic, to my mind, is so that we can deal with stuff. It's more than just saying "I'm a realist".

Lets be really real. Right out of the gate, in 2019. They saw her coming, and started planning the smears. The view didn't even pretend they hadn't anointed Biden. They were all atwitter.
From the outset Marianne painted a target on the backs of the war machine, and there are several major networks with their fingers in that pie. Nobody in Washington, or on the networks gives a tinkers cuss about Marianne's spirituality. They HAD to attack her. She was coming after Biden, who's best qualification for the presidency was his association with Obama, with a detailed reparations plan in her pocket, and no PAC money. In other words, a lose cannon, as far as the establishment is concerned. If she was into bird watching, they'd have attacked bird watching. If she was a stamp collector, they'd have attacked that.
There was never any way in tarnation, that a candidate who was not bought and paid for, talks about peace and reparations, and uses language people understand, was going to get a fair shake from the media, or the DNC. It's against their interests. But it should totally be tried, and tried again.

@danielx555 I'm proposing here, that she has executive experience as a businesswoman,. You might be referring to corporate executive experience, but I'm not sure that's so beneficial on the left. One quality I'd like to see in a leader, is some experience working personally with the common man. The reason Marianne is seeking political office, is that in her career as a councilor, she kept encountering suffering that was a result of bad public policy. One complaint I often hear about people in Washington, is that they're "out of touch:. I don't personally know the cause, but I've heard it said, and deem it possible, that the people in Washington have formed a kind of symptomatic empathy with the big money interests they encounter every day.

@PresidentByNameOnly Yes, I agree. I think some of the Williamson fans, which I admittedly am also, have seen a pattern of adversarial journalism in regards to Williamson, which stings a bit, when it doesn't seem so when they interview candidates who take PAC money, but my sense with Hasan, was that he was doing his job, and trying to be fair to Williamson, while simultaneously making it look good for the network also. My only critique really, is that I don't think journalists should dictate who can win.

She was taken to Vietnam by her father, who was an immigration lawyer, during the war, to see the effects of war. She struggled with addiction in her youth, and got into self help. She started Project Angle Food to help AIDS patients, specifically to get homebound patients food, but also massage and things to provide comfort, at a time when a lot of the public were scared to even touch them. She co-founded The Peace Alliance, and helped a lot with Sister Giant. For the past two years, since her previous presidential run, she's been talking to down ballot progressives on her podcast, to get their messages to a wider audience. I learned a lot about state legislature, listening to those interviews.

Marianne Williamson.
Am I crazy for thinking these are precisely presidential qualities?

I've noticed a lot of people, from the spiritual community, me included, who now know about Bernie Sanders, Reparations, Gun Laws, the defense budget, the way bills are drafted and passed, the war in Yemen, etcetera etcetera, just because of her, and the way she speaks, which is not in that snoozy, snarky, perfunctory political buzzword language.

Marianne Williamson.
Are these not Presidential skills?

We keep saying that the media was unfair to Marianne, but lets take stock. Last cycle, she was on The View, Trevor Noah, Steven Colbert, Bill Maher, she had a CNN town Hall, she was interviewed by Fox and MSNBC, and PBS. Niko House praised her, as did Kim Iverson, and even David Doel said he liked her debate performance. I'm not sure it did THAT much good, as compared with the work she did on the ground, which is what she really loves to do.

@russelldobular I'll try to explain. I do actually think it's past time for the most powerful nation in the world to have a woman leader, which is not to say that any woman will do. It must be a powerful woman, a woman who is well spoken, well read, and charismatic, a woman who knows history and philosophy, and sees beyond the surface of things. I don't think Marianne's vision of things is always perfect, but to my eye, the assets outweigh the shortcomings.
I like that she's not just anti war, she's pro peace, and has studied the factors that produce peace statistically.
I like that she's against corporate PAC money.
I like that she can get an entirely white audience to surge to their feet and roar in favour of reparations. I call that quality presidential.
I liked things she did during her last campaign, like having a public discourse with Andrew Yang on her channel, 20 honourable mentions to Tulsi, and she roused her fans to donate to Mike Gravel, and he met the threshold for the debates in terms of donations. She was also the only candidate apart from Bill Deblasio who came out to support Bernie. She also had something to do with helping Bernies campaign in 2016, but I can't remember the specifics.
I like that she is well travelled, and that her father took her to Vietnam during the war to see the cost of war. "See these bullet holes? Our military did that"
I looked at a number of candidates in 2019, checked out their announcement speeches and their websites and policy pages, and for me Marianne was the winner, in terms of covering the most number of bases. My reaction to her announcement speech in 2019 was admittedly an intuitive response that said, "this woman is a leader". I didn't actually know anything about her before that.
I would not be happy if she threw a phone at someone, but I honestly doubt she did.

Marianne Williamson
It's not only the fact that she can quote the Bible, the Talmud, the Dalai Lama, Martin Luther king, and Nelson Mandela, and tie it all together, and apply it to public policy. It's not only the fact that she knows the history of America at a federal level, she also knows the history state by state, it's that there are no cue cards or prompters! This is all in her head! Are these not Presidential skills?

Am I crazy for thinking these are precisely presidential qualities?

@nedlightowlers5168 When I first heard she was running, I thought her whole campaign would be a vague feel good campaign, but seeing her speak, and looking at the legion of policies on her website convinced me that there's a lot more to her than the cover of one of her books.
She's made public funding for electoral campaigns her first order of business, she's wholly grass roots, she's laid out a very concrete plan for reparations, she's committed to ban fracking, repeal the tax cuts for the very wealthy, and reinstate the middle class tax cuts, she's committed to appoint a world class environmentalist to the head of the EPA and a world class humanitarian as secretary of state. Frankly she's as good as any other candidate except on the issue of Assange, which I think she's in the process of informing herself about. She's also a very memorable figure, which I think it's an important facet of a campaign.

@polyticks8453 I think if people are collectively inspired, it cannot but get better, in the same way that life has a tendency to proliferate and expand, I think happiness does also, wherever fostered. I think it's a matter of noticing, and appreciating where things are going well, and strengthening those things, and then also building on that, and then furthermore, building bridges between harmonious movements. For instance, RBN puts out a video every other day slamming Marianne Williamson. I could get mad at that, but I also notice that they're building a library in Detroit, which I think is really awesome. They're COVERING Marianne Williamson every other day, they're clearly vociferous peace activist, and they make Marianne look good in every thumbnail for their videos, which is more than I can say for the ones they do for Pelosi and Clinton. It's important to notice the dangers and flaws, but I also want to expend more energy and air time, if you like, on the solutions.

We're currently looking at a system quagmired in its own corruption. It looks to me like those public offices, which are supposed to bestow some kind of wisdom about leadership on politicians, actually corrupts them, and makes them care more about their Washington buddies, and special interest groups, than the people they represent.
The founding fathers did not mandate that the executive branch had to be lead by a lawyer, a lawmaker or a governor. They left it up to each generation to decide what those qualifications aught to be, and what constituted wisdom in each era. After all the executive branch is already balanced by the legislative and the judicial.
There is no known vaccine against the corrupting influence of power, but I propose to you that a person who has studied psychology, philosophy and history, went to Vietnam during the Vietnam war, and started Project Angle food to feed AIDs patients, not to mention the past two years of offering a leg up to down ballot candidates, is better prepared than most.

Am I crazy for thinking these are precisely presidential qualities?

You're quite right. She's nothing like Bernie, apart from the fact that she's a friend of his, doesn't take PAC money, and supports Medicare for All. She's like Trump, but with brains, a conscience and beauty, and her speaking style, while being as bombastic as Trump, is also intelligent, considered, and delivered without cue cards.

@lachousalle31 Hmmm, maybe a bit, although Tulsi was only anti war, not necessarily pro peace. In fact, that was kind of where they parted ways, and I wanted a discussion between them, to iron it out. Tulsi is anti a lot of things, which is where I think she doesn't quite make it as a leader. Marianne has another quality, which is often used to criticize her, but I actually think is an asset. The Trump quality! Ethically and politically, she's quite the opposite, but in terms of how she can rouse an audience into roaring, and court attention, I think she's a bit like him.
