It's more drum machine being blended with the real drums, but yeah. No Santa Claus.

FWIW, I think Butch Vig's original Nevermind mixes sound a lot better than Wallace's, and I don't think Vig was using any samples.

I love Wallace's mix on that album, especially with the background vocals and bass. He had the musical savvy to consider that the rhythm guitars in Bad Religion (and in most punk music generally) are playing pretty boring parts, and you can really enrich the song by pushing the bass forward in the mix whenever it's doing anything other than laying down the root. There's this particularly melodic bass part in the chorus of the song "Better Off Dead" that just knocks me out, it's mixed so well. And then the background vocals... I love how they remind me of Queen, either because Wallace is using chorusing, or because the parts are doubled so many times that they naturally chorus. They're so incredibly thick and yet they cut across the mix like laser beams. Great production, great mix, great songs. Unfortunately the mastering hasn't aged as well as the mix. I don't know if the band will ever be able to do a proper remaster, since Atlantic owns the album and they're back on Epitaph. Desperately needs a remaster.
