Lord Admiral West has a conscious over the Iraq war of 2003. You see he was told they were going to invade back in 2002 way before the UK publicly said they would think about it. He had already moved the fleet into position before the end of 2002. Lord West said: "I think there had been a decision that we were going to invade Iraq, that that was going to happen, but they were looking for a reason to actually do it." "But I would not have told the fleets, the Royal Navy and the Marines, to be ready for war in the northern Gulf by the end of the year. I would not have sailed the Mine Counter-measures Force for the Middle East so they were in place for operations."

Major-General Jonathan Shaw who was the UK head of special forces also voiced the same concerns around this recent Syria claim. In a debate I have also heard him once say that with regards to the UK and out of the of all the wars since the 2nd world war, apart from the northern Ireland conflict and the Falklands war, they have all been unnecessary. From what I can tell the military itself, meaning not the guys making the weapons but the ones firing them, are often the last ones that want to engage in unnecessary warfare. Politicians on the other hand seem to love going to war, it increases there popularity.

@dingopanga As the head of the navy he reportedly took private legal advice on the legality of the Iraq war - which concluded that the war was legal. I respect he guy he understands what to say and what not to say in order to get the most important information across without seeming unpatriotic, he is a very cleaver guy...
