Basically states have points, Cali has over 50 I think were as states like Wyoming has 3. The reason it's based on an electoral collage system is simple, if it wasn't one or two states could control the whole of the US resulting in parties pandering only to those states such as California, Texas and NY as they have some of the largest points and largest populations. Notice how people often say Cali and NY folk live in a bubble?, those two states will always be democrat.

@noteynote4873 For the reason's already pointed out that if it wasn't that way the country could be ran via the power of one or two states, the founders knew the pitfalls of mob rule via democracy thus the electoral collage maintains the republic. In a nutshell it prevents a hostile takeover.
