  1. They used a form of "Transformer Read Only Storage" which is a core related technology and TROS is how IBM stored the microcode in 360 processors and many other places. It's magnetic ROM, but in the West and Japan it was always reprogrammed by routing a word select wire either through or around cores to create a 1 or a 0 in that bit. The ability to reprogram TROS by the method used here is very clever and I have never seen this approach used in the West.
