The building where they tested the magnets had a huge open area with yellow warning stripes painted all over the floor marking the "keep clear" area around the magnet under test. Turns out the yellow stripes were added after a screwdriver was left out and became a projectile during a magnet test. It punched a hole in the magnet assembly which is not a good thing when you're dealing with that much power.

His unit was responsible for disabling the runways with artillery fire. He is a primary source of on the ground information and has spoken about this attack from first hand experience.   32. Caution! The LIFE battery should be fine in a 1962 engine but use caution with modern ones. The issue with using those batteries to replace traditional lead-acid batteries in a situation with an alternator is that the BMS built into the battery will disconnect the battery as a load to the alternator once the battery is full, but the alternator MAY be VERY unhappy to suddenly not be facing a load and you may get a massive voltage spike into your vehicle supply rail. I've heard a lot of stories of people with expensive modern electronic modules that were fried while trying this experiment. It'll work fine if you can guarantee a sufficient load and you test the alternator/regulator for behavior when the battery is disconnected but I sure wouldn't rely on Pb->LiFePO4 conversions without knowing the charging circuit will remain happy.

  40. Excellent content. 👍 Many of these Radars are only 2D, but that is typical for search Radar systems. Going back to the early days of military Radar, it was quite standard to have a search Radar which provided detection, azimuth, and range as well as IFF stimulus, and then a second tracking Radar for more. Interesting targets would be interrogated by a secondary "height-finder" Radar to get the elevation and a 2nd source to verify the range, as well as to provide resistance to countermeasures. The Height-Finder would be rotated to the detected azimuth where it would do vertical sweeps to range the target. Being able to use phased arrays for azimuth and elevation is powerful indeed.

  42. Lava tubes are pretty common in a couple areas of California. If you want to visit the best collection, check out Lava Beds National Monument which also has an 'ice cave' (Merrill Cave) where they used to ice skate and the tubes are much larger. The ice sheet at the bottom of the Merrill Cave had a bunch of perfect circles several inches across melted into the surface and then I noticed they were the exact same size as the base of the white gas Coleman lantern I was holding (back about 1980). Apparently most of the ice from most of the ice caves is now gone thanks to global warming pushing the temperature there up by 2 degrees over the past 60 years.

Try to avoid any coax between the horn and LNA. It's fairly astounding how much loss you get in small diameter coax. If you're at threshold, that can bring you back to functional.

I walked past the Squaw Valley VOR in California back in the 1980s while skiing and distinctly recall a large black conical antenna enclosure somewhat shaped and sized like a space capsule with clearly legible warnings saying "DANGER - R.F.   60. Another option which is becoming popular these days are more general purpose and proper software defined radios. These can be had for ATS-20+ prices and even lower but don't come in a case or with a user interface. The user interface is provided by a single board computer such as a Raspberry Pi and gives features like waterfall displays and large touch screens. A very good starter rig can be had for as little as $100 US which brings features found in the expensive solutions with RF performance of the mid-priced solutions. As with all radio, understanding how antennas operate is paramount.

  61. I used to do long range microwave links long ago. The main problem with WiFi at distances beyond about 15 km became the timing built into the protocol. No matter how strong your signal was, it didn't matter if it couldn't go faster than the speed of light. Adding a repeater station with a network switch or using radios that allowed the protocol to be edited was the only way to go further with IP. My longest IP based single link was about 32 km.

  67. When IBM was still king-ish in business in the very late 1980s, the AS/400 and 3270 combination became standard faire in big business before PCs made their inroads. By 1991 I was installing 3270 emulation cards in Mac ][ systems every week. The daughter board you're pointing to on the modem board with the Z-80 on it is almost certainly a Rockwell Data Pump which is the heart of, and the actual MODEM. The stuff on the board below is the analog interface and I'll bet the Z-80 is just for the MODEM's local intelligence (AT command set stuff). FWIW, the Data Pump contains a 6502 too. Your viewers would LOVE a video showing closeups of each of these PCBs. The 'display adapter' is actually the monitor's analog board. You correctly identified the MODEM board, the motherboard or CPU board, and the peripheral interface board with the ports and the giant crystal for the serial Baud rate generator peeking out. The actual CPU is one of the 40 pins chips on that side, probably right next to the 28 pin EPROM. The other 40 pin chip on that board is likely a 6845 CRT Controller (green dot) or similar and the second 24 pin EPROM will contain the character set.

  72. We had something similar in California with inland deep water ports in both Stockton and Sacramento. It was always odd to look up from a farm field 50 km inland and behind the coastal mountain ranges to see a large freighter moving along. The Port of Sacramento was 150 km from the Golden Gate Bridge by waterway, in the middle of a large agricultural region. We had to monitor marine channels 9, 12, 13,and 14 to keep up with all the traffic and bridges. I remember watching the single barge lock in Sacramento operate in the 1980s but it might have been one of final times it did. Great job on the music by the way.

  73. Wish I could have gone. I grew up not far from there. The last time I was at the Cow Palace was to see Lynyrd Skynyrd on New Year 1989/1990. It was used for large music shows fairly often back in the 1970s and 1980s. It also got used for a lot of sports/RV shows and boat shows where they would bring in and rig up a bunch of sailboats in the main hall.

I vividly recall driving up to the guard shack about 850 m from inner reflector of the NSGA Skaggs Island antenna in the late 1970s where my father who was a Navy vet and a ham asked the guard of the antenna's purpose. The guard replied that he thought "it was some sort of nuclear thing". The family turned around and continued to our picnic and the answer was dismissed as silly, but later I learned the site was to be repurposed in the early 1970s for a phased array RADAR to guard the San Francisco area with Zeus and/or related missiles at remote launchers. An arms treaty which limited the number of interceptor warheads caused plans to shrink to just the Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex in North Dakota so the answer was less silly than thought. I drove up to the same spot in 2014 but there was a locked gate and later that year the whole access road was blocked. Side note: the first station to receive Sputnik 1 in America was the Press Wireless, Inc station roughly 5.7 km North-East of the Skaggs antenna. That station continued to track later Sputniks for the Hearst Newspaper chain.

Just for your info, the tweaks I would make to this setup would be to mount the LNA onto the feedhorn connector directly (for lowest loss), and then to run a feed in RG-6 coax (for lowest loss) from the LNA output down the support pipe to the SDR which I would mount on the support pipe just behind the reflector and next to the swivel mount. That allows you to have a Power+USB only connection to the dish and gives the least loss. If the configuration allows, one stop better might be to put the feedhorn, LNA, and SDR together where the original LNB was with no coax at all, or just one short piece of rigid coupling.

  88. They used a form of "Transformer Read Only Storage" which is a core related technology and TROS is how IBM stored the microcode in 360 processors and many other places. It's magnetic ROM, but in the West and Japan it was always reprogrammed by routing a word select wire either through or around cores to create a 1 or a 0 in that bit. The ability to reprogram TROS by the method used here is very clever and I have never seen this approach used in the West.

  89. Fantastic video as always.👍 If you have any issues with ice on your dish, one solution you can consider is to use pipe heat tape on the rear to bring it above or to keep it above freezing. A little critique on your soldering; The joints look fairly good but perhaps may be a bit cold. It's hard to judge from the video. Try keeping the iron in place for a few seconds longer so that the flux totally melts and the edges of the solder flow as much as possible and everything evens out as much as it can to where surface tension will pull it. Those posts are harder to solder than most terminals since they eat heat.

  90. IR studies are tricky thanks to emissivity. The foil demonstrates that well. I used to work in a plant with steam lines and thermal cameras showed the stainless to be cool even when they were scalding hot. Emissivity differences throw it all off. I think your largest issue is that the burner metal is effectively too bright. If you want to map the heat a bit better, I would try a thin layer of small volcanic rocks to provide a viewing plane and to obscure direct view of the burner metal. I always like a thick layer of volcanic rock between the burner and the food for evenness. I'll guess your burner is unbalanced due to overpressure for the existing channel widths. Corrosion will unbalance them over time but you can use a drill bit to fix that. Cool video. 👍 Now I need a brat with some caramelized onions on a pumpernickel roll.

I may have ridden on that elephant at the park it came from (Marine World Africa U.S.A.) and surely saw it in an elephant show, and I never knew. For locations I found: Filming took place in five different locations in the park, including Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Desolation Canyon, Golden Canyon, and Dante’s View, all of which can be accessed from the Furnace Creek Visitor Center.

  109. The alloy used for cans is usually 3104-H19 or 3004-H19 which is aluminum with about 1% manganese and 1% magnesium, and I've heard countless times that it's just not a good alloy for casting no matter what you try.

  110. I did the same thing in central Colorado with a sewing needle and a piece of aluminum foil held in the air a foot or so in font of a piece of printer paper. I seemed to get the best image by adjusting the distance from the pinhole to the paper.

  111. It's so that the artifacts created by local reflection paths and the ever so slight attenuation at the seams is effectively randomized in the returns. Think about watching rows of crops in a field as you drive by and see the moiré patterns as the rows line up at various angles. The same family of effects will affect RADAR returns. The skewed alignments allow a small number of standard panel designs to be used and results in an effectively random dispersion where it happens.

  113. Great choice for a first scope given the vintage factor, but it appears to need a re-cap and recalibration. The response looks pretty out of linear. That shows you the most basic of basic and when you want more, there are so many good, cheap scopes these days. Anything from Owon, or Rigol, or Siglent will do you great when you want a more advanced unit.

  114. Think of an oscilloscope as the next step up from a voltmeter, or a voltmeter that graphs over time. You can even use one as a voltmeter, but I've only done that in a pinch when I misplaced my meter. I couldn't recommend getting an old scope these days, given what you can get in a cheap modern scope. Your projects keep intersecting with territory where a scope can paint a picture rather than giving you a number and a picture can be worth more than 1000 words when describing what a circuit is doing. The important part here is that you apparently understand a scope is in your future. Lol. I recently picked up a portable 170 MHz bandwidth unit from Owon which is more useful than any scope I had in the 80s, but the cheap desktop units today can't be beat.

The limitations of these RV drives are really making me think about building one from scratch using off the shelf microstepping drivers and good sized motors with the t0nito helicone counterweighted. It also seems like it wouldn't be hard to add some jog subroutines that would execute every so often to measure the signal strength a little to the four sides of the predicted aim point to fine tune the predicted path to the actual path.

The cost was 1/5 of their previous vendor even with the next higher TG grade, and the HASL alloy they use was more solderable than their previous vendor too (they use Sn96/Au3.5/Cu.5 solder in production). I looked up the area around Fluorine and there are some private claims including a fluorite, uranium, and mercury mine called the Daisy Mine about 1/8th of a mile North of the Fluorine Post Office building, but it's BLM land outside the active mining claims. A lot of mine reports in the area use the active Daisy Mine shaft as a landmark to describe locations. The owner of the Daisy Mine is listed as the Crowell Family in Beaty and the collapsing mine just East of the Post Office is the Crowell Mine operated by the Crowell Fluorspar Co. of Nevada.
