  3. You're being hysterical. More than a million economic migrants and asylum seekers from Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East sailed the Mediterranean to reach Europe. They ended up in Italy, Greece and Spain, naturally. Those three countries couldn't possibly handle this on their own and felt abandoned and really angry at the rest of the EU for not sharing the burden. And because the economic migrants wanted to go to Germany anyway, and because the Schengen agreement is really important to the EU, Merkel decided that Germany could cope. She did not invite the world - her actions did nonetheless send that signal. Whereas refusing the ships to dock sends a different signal. Merkel's decision made sense at the time under those circumstances, Salvini's response makes sense today, but not without cooperation from North African states.
