Meanwhile Singapore's long-distance rail station (Woodlands Train Checkpoint) is even further from downtown than our Changi Airport; you've to take a 50min MRT (subway/metro) train ride, then transfer to a 1km+ connecting bus service, which ends up skipping the Checkpoint sometimes as it's beside our Causeway border crossing to Malaysia, which can get pretty congested before the pandemic (to the extent that authorities may require you to make a ~9km detour by backtracking 2 expressway exits because the crossing's Q has gotten too long)

Think Guangzhou , China takes this a bit far by building Guangzhou S station some 17km SW of its downtown, almost as far as Changi Airport is from downtown Singapore. Heard there're plans to develop the Panyu district that the station is in into a satellite town. For now it's a ~45min subway ride from that station to downtown I heard, which I heard makes the Xpress Rail Link from there to HK not much faster than the 'normal' speed Kowloon Through Train (which goes to the downtown Guangzhou (E) station instead I recall). shin (New) - Hakodate-Hokuto station is about as far from Hakodate, Japan too but that's also because the city is by a bay & some distance from the main rail line, which runs inland. The 2 are connected by a normal-speed only branch rail line probably so that the HSR/ Shinkansen service along the main line saves time from having to detour when it's extended further along the main line to Sapporo in the future

Japan's HSR/ Shinkansen trains also use longer cars (~25 instead of 20m) so they'd probably be unable to negotiate some sharper curves that'd've been needed to stop deeper into the cities downtowns e.g. Osaka_. Taiwan/ROC's HSR is designed similarly though the connectivity of its HSR stations to cities' downtowns wasn't as developed I think e.g. you used to have to ride a 12km shuttle bus to get from downtown _Chiayi to it's HSR station, though I heard it's since been upgraded to a BRT

Some of mainland China's train stations even have elevated & underground driveways as well as taxi ranks I remember, like airports
