Whenever I ask math teachers why students have to spend so much time computing limits, derivatives and integrals when in their career they will never actually use those abilities, I usually get an answer: "If not, how do we evaluate them?".

@NinjaOfLU exactly. I am against teaching engineers how to solve exotic substitution integrals. I say let’s use that time to make them understand what a measurable function is. Why do I have to explain the Hessian to engineers who want to become data scientists? They can compute it, but don’t have a clue what it is. Why don’t they know what they are doing when they solve a constrained optimization problem with Lagrange multipliers? I say: rather than having them compute something they don’t understand, let’s take our time to actually teach them what a LM is, how it works, let’s see some easy, easy examples, and then we have computers for number crunching! Less technicalities, more knowledge.

@dekippiesip Sorry, no. How many engineers use integration by parts or by substitution, or power series convergence during their career? How many economists? As a mathematician I use that knowledge for proofs and in research, so that's right. But out of academic research it's not used.

@LowestofheDead Exactly. Turns out that at school tests exist to prove that you know how to solve the exercises included in the test (aka studying the exam as opposed to studying the subject). Am I the only one who finds this circular thing a form of perversion?
